Euphoria’s Sydney Sweeney joins Sony’s Madame Web

Actor Sydney Sweeney (Euphoria, The White Lotus) will join the cast of Sony’s upcoming Madame Web project, unidentified. Deadline, citing unnamed sources, was the first to report the development. Sweeney also posted a screenshot of the Deadline article on her Instagram account, which you can see below.
Sweeney will join Dakota Johnson (The Peanut Butter Falcon, The Social Network), who reportedly took on the titular role of Mrs Webb in early February. While a string of names has gathered around the project — including director SJ Clarkson (successor, Dexter), and writers Matt Sazama and Burk Sharpless (Möbius) — it remains unclear what Madam Networks will be. will end up being a movie, a series, or “something else” as recently suggested.
Given the character’s historical status as a supporting cast in the Marvel Universe, the move from film to another format for the project isn’t entirely surprising. In the Marvel comics, Mrs. Wanwie is an elderly, telepathic, prescient mutant confined to a hospital bed surrounded by life-support machines resembling cobwebs. Her mutant abilities make her a formidable ally for Peter Parker, though for obvious reasons she never actually fights the villain herself.
The studio has been on a tear following the release of Spider-Man: Nowhere, with its $1.74 billion worldwide box office take, the highest in Sony’s history. The Madame Web project is one of many in development at Sony, which has released Venom in 2018 and Venom: Carnage in 2020. Spider-Man: Through Spider-Man (Part 1) is expected to be released on October 7th.
Sony’s next film is Mobius on April 1, and that release date appears to be holding steady after multiple delays.
