Fans pay tribute to Bungie classic as Halo 3’s Xbox 360 servers permanently shut down
It’s the end of an era, as January 13 marks the server shutdown date for Halo 3 and other classic, beloved Xbox 360 Halo games. 343 Industries is “retiring” the original Xbox 360 online servers used for Halo, Halo 4, Halo: Reach and other Halo games as it prioritizes newer games.
While Halo 3 and other games can still be played online through Halo: The Master Chief Collection, the original Xbox 360 servers are now offline forever. Check out the chart below, created by 343 and shared online, for a complete description of the Xbox 360 offline service. Note that the chart shows “December 2021” as this was initially pushed back to an end date before January.

Tributes to Halo 3 flooded social media, and you can see some samples of the responses below. People share heartfelt messages about what Halo 3 means to them. The original Halo 3 matchmaking lobby showed a heatmap showing where people in the world were connecting from and how many players were online at a given time, and now the lights have gone out and the number of players has reached 0. The real era is over.

As mentioned, multiplayer support for Halo 3, Halo 4, Reach, etc. is still available through the Master Chief Collection, and in the case of Halo 3, there are even new maps, weapons that haven’t been found yet and skins are available for use in the original game.
As for Halo Infinite, the game’s Fracture Tenrai multiplayer event recently returned. Game Pass members can also unlock new warthog skins. Going forward, 343 plans to release fixes for Big Team Battle issues soon, while an update to eliminate cheaters is planned for February.
