FFXIV splits Praetorium into three but keeps MSQ roulette

The final encounters of Final Fantasy XIV’s original main story had a strange legacy that made The Trial of Camp Zephyr, as well as the dungeons Castrum Meridianum and Praetorium, out of step with the modern content of MMORPGs. As previously announced, the developers are revamping these encounters for patch 6.1, and in a recent Live Letter, they’ve explained exactly what form these will take.

Cape Westwind will no longer be an 8-player demo – instead, it will be a single-player mission battle. If you want to see it again, you will need to view it in New Game Plus. Castrum Meridianum is descending from an eight-player dungeon to a more traditional four-player dungeon.

The Praetorium has changed even more, though, as it’s now three different encounters. The dungeon that started through the Battle of Gaius will now be a four-player dungeon. The Ultima Weapon fight will now be a four-player trial called The Porta Decumana. The La Habrea battle will now be a single-player mission battle.

Despite these changes, the developers say (translated via FFXIV Discord) that Castrum Meridianum and Praetorium are still available through MSQ Roulette, separate from normal Dungeon Roulette. The developers considered dropping that option, but dungeons are still longer than normal dungeons, so they’ll still have to offer additional rewards – which will be smaller than they are now, though.

6.1 will also see all major story content being single-playable thanks to NPC support for a trust system, now rebranded as a “quest support” system for story encounters. Castrum Meridianum, Praetorium, and Porta Decumana can now all be played with other players, as well as with NPCs.
