FIFA 23 will reportedly be called EA Sports Football Club

EA Sports is dropping the FIFA license and changing the name of its football game to EA Sports Football Club. At least, that’s the word of a reliable industry insider, and it matches the trademark the company filed last year. EA publicly floated the idea of removing the “FIFA” name from its messages to players around the same time.
According to insider Jeff Grubb on the latest GrubbSnax podcast, EA Sports Football Club or EA Sports FC is the name of the future sports series. While the name may change before the official announcement, this is the name used internally by the company for the game.
According to Grubb, it’s about EA’s money — the publisher doesn’t want to keep paying FIFA’s expensive licensing fees because they think players come for the game, not the name. Grubb said FIFA will now seek to make its own games under FIFA’s name, although there is no word on which developer the football association will partner with.
Polygon reported in October 2021 that EA had applied for the “EA Sports FC” trademark. Around the same time, EA Sports general manager Cam Weber said in a blog post that the studio was “exploring the idea of renaming our global EA Sports football game. This means we are reviewing our naming rights agreement with FIFA, This agreement is separate from all our other official partnerships and licenses in football.”
