Fun-hater gets Twitter bot to sabotage future Wordle puzzles, suspended

One of the fun parts about Wordle, the daily smart game, is mysteriously sharing your results with your friends. I don’t care much about the sharing part myself, but I enjoy quietly comparing my vocabulary wins to others on my Twitter timeline. Apparently not everyone liked it as much as I did, because an anonymous sourpuss decided to create a Twitter bot to spoil the next day’s answers.

It started earlier this month when software engineer Robert Reichel successfully reverse-engineered the game’s code, which could be used to reveal what’s next day. He shares his process, and how others have replicated it, in a very interesting blog post. Unfortunately, the accidental curiosity that inspired Reichel to reverse engineer the code gave another programmer the tools to cause mischief.

Twitter bot Wordlinator popped up earlier this week with a bio claiming to be “sent from the future to end wordle bragging.” It automatically replies to anyone who shares their results, chewing on their “bragging” before ruining the next day’s answer (thanks Kotaku.)

This bot – and I’m sure its creator is very funny and cool – has now been suspended by Twitter. It seems that it has been suspended a few times during its short lifespan, but this time it seems to be still there. I wouldn’t be surprised if more bots like this appear in the future, though, so if you’re an avid Wordle sharer, keep an eye out. If you’re concerned about pesky spoiler bots slipping into your replies, consider converting your results into a Townscaper project.
