Ghostbusters: Souls Unleashed Is Basically Afterlife Sequel
Friday the 13th developer Illfonic’s new project is Ghostbusters Multiplayer, which is basically a straight-up Ghostbusters sequel. Ghostbusters: Spirits Unleashed is set to hit theaters later this year, and it will continue the story “shortly after” in the 2021 film’s end credits.
PCGamesN recently sat down with the head of Illfonic to check out Ghostbusters: Spirits Unleashed, the studio’s new ghost game that was unexpectedly confirmed ahead of Afterlife’s release last year. It’s a 4v1 asymmetric multiplayer game in which four Ghostbusters – all created and customized by the player – try to capture the troublesome ghosts haunting the building.
At the end of Ghostbusters Afterlife, an end-credits scene teases the sequel, with now wealthy Winston Zedmore (Ernie Hudson) buying the Ghostbusters firehouse and the iconic Ecto-1 . Spirits Unleashed appears to be a sequel, at least for now. “The timeline is shortly after the Afterlife movie,” confirmed CCO Jared Gerritzen, “Winston has reformed the Ghostbusters, and you’re one of the new hires.” Ernie Hudson and Dan Ackroyd’s Ray are returning, the developers say they There’s a reason for the story to come here.
“We’ve got these amazing actors coming, so we can’t just make them central masters,” explains Gerritzen. “As you progress through the game, you get some story and some cutscenes along the way, so that’s really exciting for us…Adding these is an increasingly important thing for us Things that matter.” Players can interact with Ray and Winston between missions at the Firehouse and Ray’s Occult Bookstore, or manually store the ghosts they’ve caught in the containment unit. The game itself is a bit like Midnight Ghost Hunt at first glance, including prop-hunting-like abilities to have what ghosts have — including museum-quality whales and dinosaurs we’ve seen — although there’s only one player on the ghost side. Ghosts, on the other hand, have one main goal – to make the level as scary as possible. They do this by owning items, preventing the Ghostbusters from breaking their rift, and scaring civilians out of levels – fans of the haunted house management game Ghost Master will love. What’s especially clever is that the levels change as there are more ghosts, such as slime dripping from the walls.

It’s the first major Ghostbusters game since 2009’s remake of Ghostbusters: The Video Game, which never returned to its co-op multiplayer – so luckily, it’s an extension of that commitment. Ghostbusters: Spirits Unleashed will launch in Q4 2022 as an Epic Games Store exclusive on PC, though it may appear on other storefronts like Steam at a later date.
