Gigabyte announces new ultra-thin gaming laptops
Taiwanese tech giant Gigabyte this week announced their latest ultra-thin gaming laptop, the 14-inch P34G v2. It’s a thin and light laptop that’s said to be “perfect for any corporate employee who needs a reliable laptop during the day and then wants to play demanding games after get off work”.
The GTX 860M inside should handle demanding games just fine. I have mixed feelings about the choice of graphics card – on the one hand the 860M rocks the same GK104 GPU as the previous generation’s impressive GTX 775M, but on the other hand it’s not the 860M version that comes with the new Maxwell GPU.
The GK104 Kepler chip is supposed to deliver impressive gaming performance at 1080p native resolution on a 14-inch screen, but generates a lot of heat in return. When I checked Gigabyte’s GTX 765M-powered P35K, it made a lot of noise when gaming due to the slim chassis and the heat it needs to dissipate.
The GM107 Maxwell GPU, which appears in some versions of the 860M, is relatively low powered, but still delivers a decent level of gaming performance. It’s not the same as the Kepler version, but has much less impact on the battery and ears. The Kepler GPU will give you 90 minutes of battery gaming at best.
The new P34G v2 has three fan speed modes, so maybe we can at least moderate the VTOL-esque roar it can produce. That 14-inch 1080p screen looks interesting too – it’s an AHVA screen, not the dreaded TN or IPS, which means it’ll have excellent viewing angles and darker blacks than the dreaded squid.
My review sample has been ordered as I type and it will be available later this month for around $1,400/£990.
