Grim Dawn developers are building a survival city builder

We’d love to build a great city-building game around these parts, with a new Early Access release coming later this year. It’s called Farthest Frontier, and it’s a flashy-looking game where you manage a small group of settlers as they build a new town in the barren wilderness.
Farthest Frontier is developing Diablo-style action RPG Grim Dawn’s Crate Entertainment. However, it’s a different prospect entirely – Farthest Frontier promises “the most detailed farming system ever” among city builders, with 10 different crops to choose from. You must take care of your fields by removing weeds and rocks, and plan your planting and harvesting schedule carefully to ensure you are rotating crops and maintaining soil fertility.
It also promises highly customizable difficulty, letting you choose the type of game you want to play. The pacifist game has a combat-free experience, but you still have to fend off the deer and bears that call your field bounty. However, you can also up the ante by enabling human raiders and hostile armies, which you must fight by building fences and equipping city guards.

Of course, you’ll also have to deal with various disasters and diseases, such as dysentery and cholera, that can spread across your town, causing misery and destruction. To fight these nasty diseases, you need to build facilities to produce clothes, medicines and shoes, as well as teams to deal with waste and sanitation in your town.
That all sounds delightful, and it’s launching in Early Access on Steam later this year — definitely a game to watch if you’re a fan of Banished or other survival city builders.
