Guillermo del Toro’s Pinocchio will finally arrive this December. Netflix has released the first trailer for the stop-motion musical starring Jimmy Cricket. Granted, it’s a short video that doesn’t offer much insight into how this differs from other adaptations of the beloved story, but it’s certainly beautiful.

Mark Gustafson (animation director of Fantastic Mr. Fox) and Del Toro co-direct the upcoming film, which features Ewan McGregor (Birds of Prey) as Cricket, David Bullard Leigh (Doomsday) as Geppetto and Gregory Mann as Pinocchio. Check out the video below.

Pinocchio will also have a solid supporting cast: Finn Wolfhard, Cate Blanchett, John Turturro, Ron Perlman, Tim Blake Nelson, Burn Gorman, Christoph Waltz and Tilda Swinton.

The official Netflix synopsis reads: “Guillermo del Toro reimagines Carlo Collodi’s classic tale as puppets are magically brought to life to mend sad wood carvings The heart of home Geppetto. Guillermo del Toro and Marc Gustafson follow Pinocchio’s mischievous and disobedient adventures in this whimsical stop-motion musical. in pursuit of a place in the world.”

News of the adaptation first came in 2018. As he revealed when he announced the project, it’s a project del Toro has always wanted to work on, bringing his aesthetic to this beloved story. “In our story, Pinocchio is an innocent soul with an indifferent father who is lost in a world he cannot comprehend. He embarks on an extraordinary journey that brings him to his father and reality The world has learned a lot. I want to make this movie for as long as I can remember.”

As for what Del Toro may or may not be doing, he appeared to tease a new Silent Hill at last year’s Game Awards. He said he liked the art direction on Silent Hill and hoped we could get a new game out soon, and shrugged playfully. He was later asked about the statement and told the Happy Sad Confusion podcast that he didn’t have a job.
