Hogwarts Legacy releases this holiday, state of the game reveals extensive gameplay
We got our first detailed look at Hogwarts Legacy during Sony’s State of Play presentation. A 20-minute demo shows how you’ll develop students, explore the Hogwarts campus, take lessons and fight enemies.
You start the game as a freshman at Hogwarts, as a fifth grader, and fall behind the skill level of your classmates. You’ll be sorted into one of four iconic houses, meet classmates, take classes of various types, and even practice your dueling skills.
As the presentation points out, this takes place in the 1800s, so you won’t see the familiar professor from the Harry Potter movies. However, there are some cameos from familiar characters, like the nearly headless Nick. As you explore the castle, you can solve puzzles to discover dungeons and passages, and you’ll need to grow plants and brew potions in your free time. The area around Hogwarts is particularly dangerous and designed to test your skills.
During combat, you’ll have offensive and defensive spells, as well as the ability to enchant or stun enemies with items like mandrake roots. Shield Amulet allows you to deflect spells and you can dodge, teleport, or counterattack. The presentation promises the ability to mix and match dozens of spells. You’ll build your character using upgrade trees that improve your skills in potion making, spells, and more. You can loot or craft gear and make it specific to your playstyle. The broom acts as your mount, allowing you to move faster through the area. Befriending your classmates will also have its own in-game benefit, as they’ll be aware of additional skills they can teach you.
The story revolves around your character trying to unravel secrets and mysteries under the guidance of Professor Fig, from a burgeoning goblin rebellion to corrupt forces that control creatures. The presentation even hints that you might end up going down a dark path, showing the protagonist using the unforgivable curse Avada Kedavra.
Hogwarts Legacy was developed by WB Games Avalanche, the studio that developed Disney Infinity toys to life games, before being closed and reopened by Warner Bros. It’s slated for a holiday release in 2022.
Although the game is set in the popular wizarding world, it is sometimes overshadowed by the words of Harry Potter creator JK Rowling.
