Pictured above are the “tools” used in manufacturing. A mold is essentially a mold used to shape metal or plastic parts such as PC casings. Think of it as a very precise, very heavy steel cake pan.

The tools are placed on large metal presses in the factory (you’ll see these in a few slides), and raw metal is put into them and pressed into shape. Unlike cake molds, however, you can’t make a complete PC case with one tool. Dozens are required for each small bend, indentation, drilling and cutting of the metal that makes up each side panel and frame, as well as the internal geometry.

An NZXT case requires an average of 60 to 70 tools to put together, but more complex cases require more. For example, Manta requires more than 100. This is for final production only and does not include the multiple prototyping stages a case goes through during the design phase. All in all, designing the tooling for the case can cost around $150,000.

Typical lifespan of a tool? It depends on what it is phasing out. Plastic parts, an average of 250,000 pieces. Metal stamping dies have a slightly shorter life of 150,000 pieces. After that, they need to be repaired or completely replaced. Tools can also last longer – it all depends on how many units the manufacturer wants to produce. A high-volume mold can typically use up to 500,000 units.
