How to get a Minecraft cape

How can you get a Minecraft cape, you ask? You’ve probably heard rumours about a mythical piece of cloth adorning the shoulders of the best Minecraft players. Legends refer to the countless Minecraft capes that have been distributed to a lucky few over the years. The text on the block (sigh) is that the cape also changes the look of Minecraft Elytra, the magical wings found in end ships, as they take up the same space on the player’s back. Needless to say, Minecraft capes are very coveted, but they’re not easy to come by.

Those who ventured into MINECON events prior to Minecon Earth 2017 each received a cape; a different color and design each year. Even rarer are the personal capes given to lucky people in recognition of their achievements, such as Reddit user u/billyk_, who received a personal turtle cape for suggesting turtles be added to Minecraft.

Unless you can come up with a suggestion as good as a turtle (unlikely), or can travel back to past Mininecons, you seem to be out of luck when it comes to getting any Minecraft capes that are currently flying around outside. You can Try the cape with the help of a Minecraft mod, but only you can see it – or if you have Minecraft Bedrock Edition, you can get the cape through a skin pack. However, there is a way for you to get a cape for Minecraft Java Edition – read on to find out how.

Get Minecraft Cloaks by Migrating Your Account

In a 2020 blog post, Mojang announced that all Minecraft Java Edition accounts will be migrated from Mojang to Microsoft. This is a mandatory change, so if you don’t switch your accounts when the time comes, you’ll eventually be unable to play Minecraft anymore. Shh.

On the plus side, though, once you log into Minecraft with your Microsoft account, you’ll unlock a shiny new cape — maybe more, as Mojang hints that players will receive “more than one piece of clothing to show off.” A voluntary migration period is currently underway, but if you don’t see the migration option in the Minecraft launcher, keep an eye out for an email in your inbox letting you know it’s time to make the switch and get your cape – or is it a “cape”? New Minecraft accounts are automatically set to Microsoft instead of Mojang.

You can learn how to do this in due time by reading Mojang’s official blog post.

Get capes with Minecraft mods

What to do if you desperately want your avatar to have a cape now, you’re not interested in free migration cloaks? Luckily, with the power of mods, you can make your own cloak roar behind you as you walk! You can use mods like the Advanced Capes Mod to get any coveted cape in the game – or better yet, any cape you can think of.

One caveat though: other players you meet on a multiplayer Minecraft server won’t be able to see your cape unless they also have the same mod installed. The only way to get a cape that everyone can see is to wait for Mojang to gift you the official cape when you migrate your account.
