According to a report by The Guardian, UK insurer Aviva observed a 31% increase in claims involving VR headsets in 2021. Most of these claims involve the premature demise of some of the best TVs, with players unwittingly throwing themselves or their controllers on display.

However, Kelly Whittington, Aviva’s head of UK property claims, said VR wasn’t entirely unique in sparking a surge in insurance claims. In fact, the company “has seen similar trends, including consoles with phones, fitness games, and even rogue fidget spinners.” With the release of Nintendo Switch Sports in April, there’s a good chance that number will climb even higher higher.

If you’re one of the many users who recently got their hands on an Oculus Quest 2 according to the latest Steam hardware survey, it might be worth taking a few extra precautions before diving into your next Beat Saber game.
