Internet Explorer is out of the browser game this summer

It’s been a long time since Internet Explorer’s retirement, but Microsoft has warned that it’s finally time to say goodbye to its long-standing browser. While the software isn’t part of the Windows 11 app library, it will soon cease to exist on most versions of Windows 10 and will soon be eradicated from every iteration of the operating system.

According to a new wave of notifications to Windows 10 users, Internet Explorer will first be removed from newer operating system versions in June. If you want to avoid Windows updates, you may find that the browser will be around a bit longer, but it’s safe to say that the software is ready to load history properly.

Since its debut in 2015, Microsoft Edge has been patiently waiting on the sidelines to replace Internet Explorer, and it will soon start filling out its older version appropriately. So the legacy IE shortcut should launch the new Chromium-based browser, which can be shocking if you’re not used to the clean aesthetic of the newcomer.

If you’re a gaming PC fan, you probably haven’t opened Microsoft’s web portal in a long time. In a blog post last year, the company also talked about its intentions to discontinue Internet Explorer in a blog post last year, so the fact that it’s ready to finally get its hands on it might not come as a surprise.

Microsoft is clearly looking to the future with Windows 11, and its popularity as a gaming platform is growing. New features like the DirectStorage API are an undeniable boon, but the tech giant is also experimenting with quirks like Windows File Explorer banners, which show up as unsupported in the bottom right corner of your monitor if you use the install workaround Hardware watermark.
