Is Jason Momoa Minecraft Steve?
Multiple Hollywood insiders are reporting that Aquaman himself, Jason Momoa, is in the final stages of talks to star in a Minecraft movie — so Momoa would be Minecraft Steve ? Now that seems unlikely, as the film’s producers seem to have drawn less from the sandbox game and more from Telltale’s Minecraft: Story Mode to build the cast.
Originally reported by The Ankler and separately confirmed by The Hollywood Reporter and Variety, Momoa is now in final talks to star in the live-action Minecraft movie. Jared Hess, probably best known as the director of Napoleon Dynamite, will direct the film.
The original Ankler article was paid, but as Geoff Keighley points out, which suggests Mamoa will play Gabriel the Warrior, a character that originated in Minecraft: Story Mode. Of course, the movie has gone through many iterations. At various points in time, it will be directed by Peter Sollet, starring Steve Carell, and will hit theaters on March 4, 2022.
Developer Mojang proudly announced the film in 2019, with a simple plot summary: It’s “the story of a teenage girl and her unlikely group of adventurers. In the malevolent ender dragon On their way to destruction, they must save the beautiful blocky overworld.” It remains to be seen whether any elements of the story remain in the final work, the announcement has been removed from the Minecraft website.
