James Gunn talks Peacemaker’s Glam Rock soundtrack (and those opening credits)
Writer/director James Gunn’s signature style is known for his musical style. Of course, the humour and ensemble actors also get a lot of love, but the soundtrack is sure to stand out. So it’s no surprise that his latest DC project, Peacemaker, spun out of his 2021 film “Suicide Squad,” has plenty of needle-drops to work with — and then those opening lines, which deserve a shout out to themselves.
With the show’s first three episodes now airing on HBO Max, Peacemaker’s specific musical tone should be obvious, but perhaps a little surprising. Peacemaker isn’t classic rock or even geeky patriotic country, it’s all about glam rock and hair metal. But according to Gunn himself, there is a very specific reason.
Talking to the reporters’ roundtable, Gunn explained that the genres “express Peacemaker’s spirit. He loves hair metal because it represents everything his father doesn’t, you know? It’s androgynous – I think Peacemaker put it Hanoi Rock take home an album with people in makeup and fishnet stockings and everything else. Or take home a Mötley Crüe album with a satanic symbol on the front. These are direct insults to his fatherhood. So the music is definitely Yes, as the series progresses, it belongs to Peacemaker.”
Of course, Gunn assures that all the songs are written directly into the script as he is used to. “It was fun,” he said, “to be able to fit it all into the structure of the story.”
As for opening credits? In terms of their meaning, these are more literal. Gunn joked while explaining their place on the show, shouting out the lyrics “Would you like to try it? Do you really want to try it?” as a sign of the show’s “willing to go anywhere.” He elaborates: “Whether it’s about, you know, dirty language or sex, or this ridiculous dance number. There’s no real limit to what we can do creatively here. We’re not your normal DC or Marvel superheroes. TV show. I think it’s more of a story of a sad man in costume, living in a superhero world and having to compare himself to them, and we see how much he envy them.”
The first three episodes of Peacemaker are currently streaming on HBO Max, with new episodes premiering every week.
