John Romero releases a new Doom 2 level to raise money for Ukraine
Doom co-creator John Romero returned to making maps for the classic first-person shooter back in 2016, releasing two separate maps in quick succession, followed by a sprawling giant in the form of 2019’s Sigil map. By the way, this was fantastic and critically acclaimed, and a sequel is coming, this time for Doom 2. While we wait, Romero has just released a brand new Doom 2 level with all proceeds going to humanitarian work for Ukraine.
“To support the people of Ukraine and the humanitarian work of the Red Cross and the UN Central Emergency Response Fund, I will be releasing a new DOOM II level with a donation of 5 euros,” Romero tweetadding that 100% will go to these institutions.

Dubbed “One Human”, this is actually the first Doom 2 level released by Romero since the game’s launch in 1994. Sure, Doom 2 is pretty much the same as the original, with a bunch of extra monsters, a super shotgun, and some new textures, but it’ll be interesting to see how much Archviles Romero puts into his new levels. Hopefully not more than the one in the screenshot above. I beg you, John.
Doom’s map-making and modding community is still going strong after nearly 30 years, and Romero’s Sigil megawad proves that you can still do really cool and unexpected things with the Doom engine. Jeremy Peel, who played “Mark” for us in 2019, wrote: “Romero may have left the editor long before I got into his level, but it feels like he’s still there watching I’m doing it — the sly stage crew pulling the levers, playing with my head, and most importantly, doing it for a long time.”
