KOTOR remake studio acquires DnD remaster devs

With Aspyr Media announcing its acquisition of Beamdog, the studios behind the upcoming KOTOR remake and Baldur’s Gate remake are merging into one. The deal is still subject to regulatory approval, but once completed, Beamdog will continue to operate as an independent sub-studio within Aspyr.

Beamdog recently announced MythForce, an ’80s cartoon-style roguelike game, coming to early access next week. Aspyr will be “working closely” with Beamdog on the new game. MythForce is the first original IP for Beamdog, the studio founded by BioWare veterans Trent Oster and Cameron Tofer, which previously focused on remastered games such as Baldur’s Gate, Icewind Dale, Planescape: Torment and Neverwinter Nights.

Known primarily as a port studio, Aspyr has recently worked on bringing a slew of Star Wars games to modern platforms. The studio announced a remake of Knights of the Old Republic in September 2021, which looks to be a much bigger project. Aspyr itself is a subsidiary of Sabre Interactive, which in turn is part of the Swedish holding company Embracer Group, which owns Koch Media, THQ Nordic, Gearbox and more publishers.

Shortly after Aspyr’s KOTOR remake was announced, Trent Oster revealed that Beamdog had initially pitched Lucasfilm Games for remakes of the two original games.

Here’s a glimpse of our failed pitch: (The Reforged Collection). It always makes me sad to look at failed pitches in hindsight and think about the hard work that went into building them. pic.twitter.com/nqg12m2NAw
