League of Legends’ next VGU goes to Skarner
The result is out. League of Legends fans have already voted on who the MOBA game’s next big VGU (visual and gameplay update) will go to, and the winner is none other than Crystal Vanguard himself – Skarner. The title released a decade ago was the undisputed winner of the overhaul and beat four other League of Legends champions to top the fan vote.
“With a decisive victory, the next VGU champion will be Skarner!” the developers announced in a blog post, emphasizing that Skarner won by a considerable margin. The Fighting Champion won a whopping 33.4% of the vote, with Shyvana (19.6%) in second place, Tryndamere (17.3%) in third, Kogmer (15.3%) and Nocturne (14.4%) at the top bottom end.
Given that Skarner is 10 years old and only has six skins so far, he seems like the right choice for the game’s next big VGU. There’s no word on when it will arrive, given that voting has just closed, but the developer says it’s “a few months before we start.” We can keep an eye out for his VGU update “this year”, they added.
“We’re very excited about Skarner winning the VGU vote because we think he has a lot of potential to be a really special guy on the league roster,” said lead producer of champion Ryan ‘Reav3’ Mireles. “We’ve tried smaller revamps of Skarner’s kit in the past, but it didn’t really improve his play rate, so we’ll be looking for a massive reboot of his kit, themes and visuals (similar to Sion and Urgot). We want to keep his kidnapping ult in some form, or we’ll rebuild him from scratch.”
Mireles stressed that Skarner doesn’t currently have the biggest background the team can delve into, but the good news is that the team “looks forward to getting a deeper understanding of their world and backstory through VGU.”

Elsewhere, the developers revealed that Goth won the skin-themed makeover poll by a landslide (49.4% of the vote, compared to 25.5% for Infernal and 25.1% for Arclight). “We’re very excited about how our secondary aesthetic is performing in the current league, and there are many different directions we could take,” the developer said. “We’ve started exploring some of these as we’ve entered the discovery process – from cute and spooky to serious and dark, there’s a lot of black to try. Our next steps are to determine what’s true about the existing gothic skins The feeling, and where we want to go for the new skin!”
