LEGO Star Wars: The Skywalker Saga developer confirms April release amid crunch

LEGO Star Wars: The Skywalker Saga is finally set to release this April, nearly three years after it was originally announced. An extensive trailer breaks down a new game feature billed as “the biggest LEGO video game to date,” but today also brings more troubling allegations of intense and bad work at developer TT Games condition.

LEGO Star Wars: The Skywalker Saga launches April 5, 2022 on PC, Switch, Xbox, and PlayStation consoles. New features in the upcoming PC game include a greater focus on space travel and combat, as well as more precise control through combo systems and precision targeting options for ranged characters. (The game also adds a “Grumpy Mode” cheat that lets you replace cutscenes sounds with old Lego-style gibberish.)

The new LEGO Star Wars has seen multiple delays over the past few years, which, according to a Polygon report, have done little to alleviate the studio’s “extensive crunch.” Citing interviews with more than 20 current and former developers, the report said employees were often asked to work more than 80 hours six days a week during critical times.

Polygon’s report also claims that part of the game’s development issues was management’s insistence on building a new engine called NTT for The Skywalker Saga, rather than using the proven – albeit more expensive – option in Unreal. Developers interviewed also cited feature creep as another source of problems with the game. New features would be implemented and subsequently removed, resulting in “months of work lost”.

“TT Games is committed to creating a respectful, fair and inclusive workplace for every employee,” a spokesperson for the developer told Polygon. “In recent years, with the support of new studio leadership and Warner Bros. Games, we have made many efforts to foster a culture of collaboration and work-life balance that our employees can be proud of. Our many years Our legacy of creating games that keep our fans happy is very important to us. We recognize that our continued and future success depends on maintaining the momentum of the positive changes we’ve made so far, ensuring every employee feels supported , appreciate and experience a true sense of belonging.”

The report concludes that TT Games is undergoing some positive changes, including moving to Unreal Engine for future projects and implementing limits on the amount of overtime allowed.
