Microsoft investigates Bing and Cortana source code hacks

Microsoft is investigating a potential security breach involving a ransomware hacking group. The gang, known as LAPSUS$, has previously hacked Nvidia, Samsung and Ubisoft, and a new statement says they have now compromised the Windows 11 company’s internal systems and data.

Vice emphasized that screenshots shared to a private Telegram channel indicated that LAPSUS$ had gained access to an Azure DevOps account. The image specifically details links to the source code of the Bing search engine and Cortana. Microsoft confirmed in a statement that it was “aware” of the claims and was investigating the situation.

LAPSUS$ has yet to make any demands of Microsoft, but it has a reputation for trying to force companies to fulfill their wishes. For example, it previously required Nvidia to unlock its best graphics cards to enable crypto mining on GPUs with hash rate limiters. However, that’s not to say the hacker isn’t interested in money, as it also holds data for ransom and threatens victims with leaks.

It’s worth noting that LAPSUS$ operates differently than a typical cybercriminal group because it doesn’t infect targets with ransomware. Instead, it manually obtains internal data and then weaponizes it through extortion.

CRe-edit: Vice

The data breach is obviously bad news for Microsoft, but it also affects anyone using the company’s services. If you have Windows 11 installed on a gaming PC or laptop, source code leaks can contribute to vulnerabilities and ultimately compromise the security of the operating system. That said, the level of access and intent of the hacking group is not entirely clear, so we may have to wait for the situation to develop before we know how it will affect the tech giant and its wide-ranging customers.
