Minecraft now has a working version of the giant minesweeper

The creators of Minecraft really can’t stop adding new games, and we don’t want to stop them. At the end of March we wrote about players who recreated Wordle in-game, and today we bring you the man who recreated the legendary minesweeper using redstone and an astonishing number of moving parts.

This map is from CraftyMasterman, who made a Reddit post to show it off. Aside from the scale of the device you’ll be using to play it, the video doesn’t show much, but it looks incredible. Lava is used to represent numbers, and there are even some handheld minimaps you can view as you play, which replicate what’s happening on the board.

If you’re interested in seeing how it came about, you can watch a video of it on CraftyMasterman’s YouTube channel. As it turns out, this build is part of a larger Redstone build competition, with a sizable prize pool – whoever can come up with the most impressive Redstone creation can compete for $10,000.

While the CraftyMasterman couldn’t finish his match judging in time, he decided to move on after betting his reputation as a Redstone legend on it. He spent another two weeks working on it, going through multiple iterations, before triumphantly showing a working version to the competition’s judges.

Even as a seasoned Minecraft player, the sheer complexity of the build is staggering. The builder not only had to create the giant board himself, but also needed to make it display numbers, count the number of TNT squares around it, and randomize it in a way that was noticeable enough to make the game interesting. Needless to say, this is far beyond what the average Minecraft player can do, or have the patience to try.

It’s a remarkable example of what’s possible in Minecraft, and even better, you can play around the world yourself by downloading it here. Just be sure to run the download over viral content just in case; always practice safe downloading.

Ridiculous build aside, maybe you’d like to see this cool new Easter egg from a snapshot from over two years ago?
