NLRB finds opposition to Activision at Warzone union hearing

🖥️

The National Labor Relations Board announced that 21 QA employees at Raven Software, a subsidiary of Activision Blizzard now best known for their work on Call of Duty: Warzone, are eligible for a union vote. Activision argues that any such vote would have to include all of the studio’s staff, which number more than 200, and union supporters say it would weaken voting rights.

As The Washington Post reported, the NLRB will now mail union ballots to eligible employees, including full-time and part-time QA workers currently employed by Raven. Votes will be counted during a video conference on May 23.

An Activision Blizzard representative told the Post that the company is reviewing legal options, including appealing the decision. “While we respect the NLRB process,” the representative said, “we are disappointed that less than 10 percent of our employees have made decisions that could have a significant impact on the future of our entire studio. A direct relationship is the best way to achieve personal and company goals.”

Back in January, Raven Software QA staff teamed up with Communications Workers of America to form the Game Workers Union, but Activision Blizzard did not respond to a request to voluntarily recognize the union. The GWA was formed in response to a mass layoff of Raven’s contract QA workers, a move that sparked a strike.

In July 2021, the state of California filed a lawsuit against Activision Blizzard alleging years of discrimination and harassment in the workplace. The story has since embroiled CEO Bobby Kotick and prompted an investigation by the U.S. federal government. It continues to grow and is of immense importance to the gaming industry. You can read about all the progress so far in this regularly updated explainer article.

Earlier this month, Activision Blizzard announced it was converting all contracted QA testers across all of its studios to full-time employees and raising the minimum wage to $20 an hour. However, the company did not offer raises to Raven’s workers, which the representative said was “due to a legal obligation under the National Labor Relations Act”.
