Nvidia RTX 4000 GPU could be RTX 5000 graphics card

🌐

The Nvidia GeForce RTX 4000 rumor mill is in full swing, but you probably won’t see an RTX 4070, RTX 4080, or RTX 4090 hitting store shelves by the end of the year. New rumors suggest that the Green Team may skip the 4000 moniker entirely, referring to its Ada Lovelace GPUs as the RTX 5000 series.

Nvidia’s next-gen GPUs are about 6 months away from becoming a reality, but there are plenty of leakers Spring Breeze 5719 and Kopite7kiki The suggested naming convention is not set in stone yet. Rather than inherit the Ampere-based GeForce RTX 3000 series in the logical way you’d expect, we’ll likely see the RTX 5090 lead the charge for the new series.

While Nvidia may think the reported performance gains of its new graphics cards warrant a stronger name, that’s more likely due to superstition. The number four is considered unlucky in China because it sounds almost identical to the pronunciation of the word “death” and is often avoided out of respect.

This isn’t the first time we’ve seen a company skip a generation of product names. AMD handily moved past consumer-based Ryzen 4000 CPUs in favor of Ryzen 5000 processors to avoid confusion and further cement the differences between the Zen 2 and Zen 3 architectures.

Nvidia may have the same reason to further separate out its Quadro RTX 4000 workstation graphics cards, as these are already available and contain the previous-generation Turing architecture. That said, it also has Quadro RTX 5000, 6000, and 8000 ranges in circulation, so that seems unlikely.

However, Nvidia has yet to confirm the existence of its next-generation GPUs, so take this rumor with a grain of salt for now.
