Oculus Quest 2 update adds Meta logo to VR headset splash screen

The Oculus Quest 2 is now officially called the Meta Quest, but the remnants of the defunct brand are still attached to the VR headset. While a physical Meta makeover of existing stock isn’t practical, the company is reportedly replacing the device’s Oculus splash screen logo as part of its Metaverse rebranding effort.

UploadVR found that the subtle change will come with system software version 38, which will switch Oculus’ signature oval logo with Meta’s oddly shaped infinity symbol. As with all Oculus Quest 2 updates, the rollout will take place over the next few months, meaning the device’s digital branding won’t be a thing of the past right away.

Longtime Oculus fans may be in for a gloomy surprise the next time they don their virtual reality goggles, but the decisive update confirms the fact that the VR brand is gone. Of course, if you buy the Quest 2 now, it will still use the old name, but a recent Superbowl ad hinted that future production runs will carry the new Meta badge.

If we’re sure of one thing, it’s that Meta’s next best VR headset won’t be called the Oculus Quest 3. The same goes for the Oculus Quest Pro, a high-end mixed reality experience currently known as Project Cambria.

Of course, Meta’s rebranding strategy aims to help it become a Metaverse pioneer, but it risks alienating casual users and Oculus fans who just want to bring VR to their gaming PCs. That said, the Quest store managed to make $1 billion in revenue last year, so in the future the headset might be able to thrive without relying on the Oculus pedigree.
