The Oculus Quest 2 is a VR headset heavyweight, and Meta is using its success to fuel its Metaverse plans. Not only has the rumored Oculus Quest Pro morphed into a different VR venture called Project Cambria, but the company says an Oculus Quest 3 is still in the works.
It’s not an unexpected move to release a successor to one of the best VR headsets on the market, but Meta recently rebranded its Quest line to better match the name of its Facebook parent company. Naturally, that means the Oculus Quest 2 could be the last of its kind, as the Oculus Quest 3 could carry the Meta Quest tag.
Meta’s Quest will continue, and gaming PC headsets may take a different path than Project Cambria. However, both VR experiences are likely to feature similar technology, making matching rumors difficult. With that in mind, here’s what we know about the Oculus Quest 3, including its price, release date, and specs.

Oculus Quest 3 price
The Oculus Quest 3 doesn’t have an official price tag, but it’s likely to be cheaper than Meta’s Project Cambria. It’s also worth noting that the Oculus Quest 2 costs significantly less than the original, with the 64GB model priced at $299 instead of $399. If this price trend continues, the Quest 3 could end up being more affordable than its predecessors.
To some extent, maintaining an accessible price point benefits Meta’s ambitions. The company could spark interest in the Metaverse and Web 3.0 by making virtual reality affordable for novice and casual gamers alike.
Oculus Quest 3 release date
Meta has yet to offer an ETA for its next wave of VR products, but according to XR hardware analyst Brad Lynch, Project Cambria may be released before the Oculus Quest 3. The high-end Metaverse headset will be released in the second quarter of 2022, while the Quest 3 will debut at Meta’s 2023 Connect event, according to people familiar with the matter.
Meta Cambria (Q2 2022) will include MiniLED screens. The goal is to sell 3 million HMDs in the first year.

Of course, component shortages and the ongoing pandemic could derail Meta’s VR headset release plans. So until we get an official word from the social media giant, it’s best to take any analyst leaks with a grain of salt.
Oculus Quest 3 Specifications
The Oculus Quest 2 is an impressive kit that improves upon the original Quest. However, the Oculus Quest 3 will rival Sony’s PSVR 2, which has a 4K HDR OLED panel and a 2000×2040 resolution per eye.
While it’s safe to say Meta’s new headset improves on the Quest 2’s resolution, Brad Lynch says the Quest 3 could use the newer uOLED screen technology. Ultimately, this could give the headset an edge in Sony’s future VR offerings, especially when it comes to maximizing image quality.
The Oculus Quest 3 will likely match the Quest 2’s 120Hz refresh rate, and its capabilities will likely improve with future updates. Meta might even opt to use light field display technology, a new innovation from VR company Creal. Not only does the technology bring 240Hz to the device, but it also blurs the lines between real and virtual reality visuals with enhanced distance rendering.
Oculus Quest 3 Controller
Meta has yet to tease its new VR controllers, but screenshots shared by YouTuber Basti564 suggest the upgrade is in the works. Leaked via an alleged Meta Facebook Workplace meeting, the controller has a familiar disc shape and a built-in infrared camera that could replace the need for a tracking ring.
It’s hard to tell if the controllers in the Basti564 video are legitimate, and there’s no indication that they’ll be paired with the Oculus Quest 3. In fact, the video explicitly mentions the Oculus Quest Pro, the non-Quest device now known as Project Cambria. It’s possible that both headsets use the same controllers, which could create common ground in Meta’s upcoming line of VR products.
