Oculus Quest Pro – Meta headset release date, price and specs

While the Oculus Quest 2 sets the bar extremely high for the best VR headsets, we can expect even better devices in 2022. Meta (formerly Facebook) appears to have big plans for a virtual reality scene, and a new headset codenamed Project Cambria is at the center of its metaverse ambitions.
While we suspect Project Cambria is the new name for the previously rumored Oculus Quest Pro, Meta is keeping the device’s true identity a secret. However, it is widely believed that it will provide a high-end mixed reality experience and will distance itself from the Oculus Quest gaming headset.
At the company’s first Meta Connect conference in October 2021, CEO Mark Zuckerberg described Project Cambria as a “new advanced and high-end product.” This description may be more fluffy than useful, but we’ve put together everything we know about the Oculus Quest Pro in an effort to decipher the Meta headset’s price, release date, and specs.

Oculus Quest Pro release date
Project Cambria has no firm release date, but Meta says the new headset will be released sometime in 2022. It’s worth noting that the Oculus Quest 2 was released 18 months after the original, so if release date trends continue, its successor could arrive in May.
Of course, the ongoing pandemic and component shortages could affect Project Cambria’s arrival date, so it’s best not to take any release date predictions as gospel. There’s also the fact that the device looks nothing like its predecessor, with its current “Project” tab warning of potential changes and delays.
Oculus Quest Pro price
Meta didn’t disclose the suggested retail price of Project Cambria, but Zuckerberg put it at the “high end of the price range.” That suggests the headset will cost more than the Oculus Quest 2, which retails for $299.
Oculus Quest Pro Specifications
Just like the Oculus Quest 2, Project Cambria will be a wireless, standalone headset. Despite its standalone capabilities, you can probably plug it into your gaming PC for better fidelity and performance, and you can still cut the cord with Oculus Air Link.
Project Cambria also features eye tracking, which provides users with another way to input. The technology also allows developers to implement centerpoint rendering, an adaptive scaling technique that preserves high resolution for the player’s line of sight while scaling down everything else. Not only does this make everything you see in the virtual world crystal clear, but it also ensures that the processing power of the device is not wasted.
Face tracking is another Project Cambria trick worth mentioning, as the device’s sensors replicate facial expressions in real time. Naturally, this could play a role in making the metaverse a reality and adding another layer of communication and expression in virtual spaces.
Augmented reality is another part of the Project Cambria experience, as the headset will feature an external camera that isn’t limited to black and white. While the implementation of the feature may not be comparable to Microsoft’s Hololens, a device with a transparent display, the Oculus Quest Pro has a larger field of view on one side.
Oculus Quest Pro Controller
We’ve yet to see an official word on the Oculus Quest Pro’s controllers, but leaked screenshots of an alleged Facebook Workplace video conference have popped up online. This image, shared by YouTuber Basti564, depicts two familiar-looking disc-shaped controllers with built-in infrared tracking cameras instead of tracking rings.
It’s currently impossible to tell if the controller in the leaked screenshots is a fake, a prototype, or the final version. Nonetheless, hand tracking will provide a more reliable and accurate experience, which is in line with Project Cambria’s high-spec VR agenda.
