Overwatch 2: Everything we know

Overwatch 2: Everything we know

The highly anticipated “Overwatch 2” may have a long way to go, but the detailed game graphics are slowly coming together. It was first announced at the 2019 Blizzard Carnival that the upcoming 2016 sequel to Blizzard’s popular team-based first-person hero shooter game will provide new and old players with new things, including story missions, hero redesigns and new maps. We learned a lot about Overwatch 2 in 2021, and Blizzard provided new details showing how you will fight, where, and which heroes you will fight when the game is finally released.

In order to help you quickly understand all the information about “Overwatch 2”, we have organized this feature and explained all the basic details in detail. For specific topics, please use the above table of contents, otherwise just scroll through all the information, trailers, etc.

Publish window

Overwatch 2 has no definite release date, and it slipped away in 2021 without much additional information. We do know that the wait will continue for some time-in the November 2021 earnings conference call, Activision Blizzard stated that it would further postpone Overwatch 2 but did not give a time for the postponement. arriveSo, it seems that you can play Overwatch 2 sometime in 2022 as soon as possible. However, Activision Blizzard’s discussion of this situation shows that it does not expect to see sales growth of “Overwatch 2” or other major games in the next fiscal year, with its dossier, Diablo 4. This may mean that “Overwatch 2” will not be released until April 2023 at the earliest, but this is still somewhat unclear.

However, based on the investor conference call, we do know that the Overwatch League will still play the early version of Overwatch 2 in early 2022.

platform

At BlizzCon 2019, Blizzard confirmed that “Overwatch 2” will land on all platforms that currently support the first generation of “Overwatch”, including Nintendo Switch. At the time of writing, it is not yet certain whether it will also appear on PS5 and Xbox Series X|S.

  • release date: Not applicable
  • platform: PC (Battle.net), Switch, PS4, Xbox One
  • type: First-person shooter

Director Jeff Kaplan steps down

After working at Blizzard for nearly 20 years, Overwatch director Jeff Kaplan announced in April 2021 that he would leave the company. In addition to working for many beloved Blizzard games during his tenure, including World of Warcraft and Warcraft 3, Kaplan has basically been a public member of Overwatch since the release of the first game in 2016 Spokesperson, and his departure is a major reorganization of “Overwatch” and its sequel.

Kaplan’s successor is Aaron Keller-check out our interview with the new director of “Overwatch 2” after he assumed the following position.

Blizzard’s turbulent year

In addition to Kaplan’s departure, Activision Blizzard also experienced turmoil in 2021, mainly focusing on Blizzard’s allegations of sexual harassment, discrimination, and workplace misconduct. In July, the California Department of Fair Housing and Employment sued Activision Blizzard, claiming that the company “cultivates a gender-discriminatory culture” in which women’s salaries are much lower than men’s, and people of color suffer discrimination. The lawsuit also claims that gender discrimination “has plagued the male-dominated gaming industry for decades,” and proposed this legal action to “remedy, prevent, and stop” Activision Blizzard for violating California’s civil rights and equal pay laws.

These lawsuits aroused strong opposition from the entire gaming industry and within the company. Employees went on strike to protest workplace conditions and Activision Blizzard’s management of the situation. Blizzard President J. Allen Brack stepped down and was replaced by Jen Oneal and Mike Ybarra; Oneal subsequently announced that she would step down at the end of 2021 and let Ybarra be solely responsible. Although Oneal basically held the same position, its income has been lower than Ybarra.

Blizzard’s internal situation is much more, including more lawsuits and other actions taken by the company’s leadership and CEO Bobby Kotick. See the full timeline of the situation for more information.

Game modes and maps

First of all, Blizzard has long said that Overwatch 2 and PvP in Overwatch will be compatible with each other-so even if you insist on using the original game, you can still play the sequel with anyone who has bought the game.

However, Overwatch 2 will include some new content of the battle we saw in the original game. At BlizzCon 2019, Kaplan demonstrated a new game mode called Push, described as a “core game mode” that can be played in fast and competitive games, and will also appear in the “Overwatch League”. Early game screens in push mode on the new map of Toronto, Canada show that two teams are fighting to escort robots into enemy territory. The team that pushes the robot into the opponent’s territory furthest before the end of the time will win the game. As the robot moves along a linear path toward the enemy line, it occasionally encounters obstacles that must be pushed to unlock the checkpoint. This will temporarily slow down the robot, but the checkpoints they unlock will also unlock new respawn points.

In May 2021, Blizzard shared with us more about the changes to the “Overwatch 2” formula. Most notably, the game will shift to 5v5 competitions instead of the current 6v6 mode. The team composition is also being adjusted so that the team can only use one tank.

Overwatch 2 will provide a new PvP map for Push mode, but it will also provide each current “core” game mode. Because of the new maps, the team hopes to ensure that players have a “new experience” that will also appear in the original Overwatch. Blizzard mentioned several new maps earlier, and showed two others in May 2021.

Check out Blizzard’s Push mode video, which shows new maps of Rome, Toronto, and New York.
