People prefer updating Windows 10 rather than upgrading to Windows 11
Microsoft’s latest operating system may be shiny and new, but an AdDuplex report in March suggested that more people are opting to update to Windows 10 than to upgrade to Windows 11. According to Windows Update data, only 20% of gaming PCs and laptops are using OS updates, while 21% are using alternative updates.
Currently, more than 50% of users choose not to Update Windows 10, while 80% of PCs have not yet upgraded to Windows 11. Since February, users who downloaded build 21H2 have increased by 7%, but the number of people upgrading to the new Windows has increased by only 0.4%.
It’s worth noting that while some users may overlook the opportunity to install Windows 11 for free, strict TPM requirements mean the upgrade isn’t available on some PCs. For machines that do not meet Microsoft system requirements, there is a workaround, but the latest version of the OS will use unsupported hardware with a watermark and Windows Update will not be available.
Slowly but surely, we should see more people upgrade to Windows 11, and it’s still early days for the new OS. However, its use could be stifled by previous issues, such as Intel Alder Lake CPU DRM issues and bugs that could impact PC performance.
Thankfully, most of these issues have been fixed, and new features like DirectStorage can speed up game load times tenfold. However, some of Microsoft’s other good ideas, like banner ads in Windows File Explorer, might be enough to convince some loyal Windows 10 fans to stick around.
