The “years in development” Portal 2 mod plans to overhaul the adventure game’s graphics to make Aperture Science look as good as Valve Software’s latest game Half-Life: Alyx makes City 17 look – and Portal 2: Desolation Will get new stories, too. So, Portal 3, right?
While we wouldn’t necessarily call it an old game, Portal 2 is both a time-honored classic and nearly 11 years old at this point. Not only does Half-Life: Alyx look much better than it, but so does Aperture Science, a collection of free games released by Valve to promote the Steam deck.
The ambitious Portal 2: Desolation mod aims to change all that, on top of an all-new story. It’s been in development for a few years – we last heard of it in 2019, and it promises a more “disturbing” story in the Portal universe, and 40-50 test chambers of medium difficulty, average game play The time is approximately 6 to 8 minutes hours.
The latest update from the Desolation team — the first since 2020 — reveals an “ambitious overhaul” of Portal 2, the mod, and an ongoing engine. It “completely replaces Source Engine’s rendering and lighting pipeline,” the team said. This includes better surface rendering, an upgraded lighting system, lights that are no longer static, and “rebuilding some core Portal 2 assets from scratch”. The bad news is that Desolation still has some way to go. According to the team, there is “a lot of work to be done before perfecting and perfecting this ambitious graphics overhaul, and a lot of work to complete the rest of the game”. Hope it was worth the wait.
