Runescape is getting a tabletop RPG ‘fully compatible’ with DnD 5e

Runescape is making its first (and then second) foray into the world of tabletop gaming. Based on Jagex’s long-running MMO, a DnD 5e-compatible board game and tabletop RPG is coming later this year. Each is aimed at fans of Runescape and Old School Runescape and will see players explore Gielinor’s fantasy environment.

Jagex is working with desktop publisher Steamforged Games on these releases, announcing them in a joint press release on January 24. Steamforged Games, which has previously developed 11 other digital tabletop games, is no stranger to bringing the pixel and polygon franchise to cardboard and dice. Adaptations, including board game versions of Dark Souls and Monster Hunter: World. Right now, for example, it’s working on a Dark Souls tabletop role-playing game.

Meanwhile, the tabletop role-playing game will include a “richly illustrated hardcover core book” for designing characters and quests, and will be fully compatible with D&D 5e.

Meanwhile, the Runescape board game for 1 to 5 players promises “a fresh but faithful adaptation of classic quests and characters,” including chatting with NPCs, exploring the world, and tackling quests. There will also be crafting, cooking and leveling up skills – this is Runescape after all.

While the tabletop RPG is “going straight to the store,” Jagex and Steamforged Games plan to crowdfund the board through Kickstarter. “Using the crowdfunding platform and other dedicated community spaces, we were able to engage directly with fans of Runescape and Old School Runescape throughout development,” explained Steamforged Games creative director and CCO Mat Hart.
