A special preview event for Sea of Thieves has confirmed that players will be able to look forward to several major updates this year.
Rare shared an extensive 20-minute preview with Creative Director Mike Chapman and the rest of the team on how players can expect the game to evolve over the next 12 months. First, the video takes a deep dive into how seasonal updates will change by introducing adventures and mysterious events — story-focused events designed to complement the seasons by offering regular narrative-driven content for players to play alongside other content.
Adventures are time-limited events that are scheduled monthly and will last two to three weeks, each forming a chapter within an overarching narrative. These will feature animations and ending adventures that will end each narrative arc, with the first event – The Shrouded Island – kicking off on February 17.
Beyond the adventure, there are mysteries that will remain in the world for longer and will rely on the community to solve clues and riddles to advance the story. More information on the mystery will be revealed soon, but Rare has hinted that players will be trying to solve the murder.
Starting in March, Season 6 will feature a new battle and exploration experience called Sea Forts, but each season will continue to bring new features and content as well as rewards, Pirate Emporium stocks and the Loot Pass. Six sea fortresses will appear around the world, traversed from the cursed sea and protected by patrolling phantoms. Players will need to fight and collect keys to fully explore the fort.
Later, Season 6 will introduce new content for Pirate Legends, planned to be a brand new, Legend-exclusive Voyage with story content and challenges.
Finally, Rare confirmed that after “prolonged internal discussions” it has decided to shut down Sea of Thieves’ Arena mode in the coming months. According to the developers, maintaining quality checks and bug fixes for Adventure and Arena modes has become increasingly difficult as Sea of Thieves develops.
