Starfield developers want it to be ‘NASA punk’


While many have been referring to Starfield as “like Skyrim in space” — including its own director, Todd Howard — there’s no doubt that it will have a completely different aesthetic of its own. Especially since we’re talking about a futuristic role-playing game in space, not a fantasy epic set in an ancient Norse-inspired land. Now, we have a better idea of ​​the style Bethesda is going for in space games, which it calls “NASA-punk.”

“Early on the project, when we were trying to establish the overall aesthetic of this game, we coined the term ‘NASA-punk’ to describe a more solid and relevant sci-fi universe,” lead artist Istvan Pely in a new Xbox Wire post said in. “We want a very realistic shot. You can draw a line from today’s space technology and extrapolate from there to the future so it’s believable and relevant.”

“What’s really interesting is how well we understand the concept,” added lead animator Rick Vicens. “When you say NASA-punk, the art team can instantly take those two words and make it work. It’s just the perfect term for our art direction to keep everyone on the same page and work in a consistent style. Come to me Say, it just clicked. At the beginning of the project, I thought that word was critical to us.”

As we hear more about Bethesda’s next big game, this theme of it being rooted comes up. Todd Howard explained last year that Starfield is “more solid” than its iconic behemoth Skyrim, although it still has that magical “walking out” moment when you enter a fantastic new world.

We’ve also been able to learn about the world of Starfield, and what it looks and feels like, through footage revealed over the past year. We got a good look at some of its location and ship concept art at last year’s Skyrim anniversary concert, part of which was designed specifically for Starfield’s soundtrack, and while most of it looks weird, retro country Style its place and spaceship encounters.

We also see a “NASA-punk” style reflected in its trailer (above), in which we can see notes reminiscent of the space program and astronauts we know in our own world, albeit a little more punk , more crude- and off-the-shelf gear and aesthetics.

Starfield’s release date is November 11, 2022, though we should see it again this summer, possibly at the Xbox and Bethesda showcases during this year’s E3.
