Starfield Devs discuss new RPG elements, persuasion systems and questioning the nature of existence

Bethesda Game Studios will launch its next big game, Starfield, this November. The developer is teasing news about the sci-fi role-playing game in its “Into the Stars” series, with the latest episode now airing. The episode, titled “For the Wanderers,” features Game Director Todd Howard, Design Director Emil Pagliarula, Lead Quest Designer Will Shen, and Art Director Istvan Pely about how Starfield will try to “take on the next evolution of RPGs.”

More specifically, the developers talked about how Starfield will give players “the freedom to create their own journey through the universe.”

Howard said in the video that Starfield will allow players to see and learn more about “backgrounds, traits, ‘defining your character’, all those stats”.

“I think there are so many games out there that do these things and people are ready to do a lot of the old hardcore RPG things — some of the things we used Do — do it again in a new way,” he added.

In the video, Pely said Starfield’s technology assets were “severely upgraded.” It features face and body scans based on real-world models, similar to how games use photogrammetry for their landscapes. “It’s not just your player’s appearance and so on. We want all of the personal interactions with NPCs and other characters in the game to be as impactful as possible, and for that you have to trust that these are real people,” Pely said.

Also in the video, Howard says Bethesda’s games are known for how they offer players storytelling opportunities that go beyond Bethesda’s design and intent, and the studio is working with Starfield. “It seems like no matter what story we write, the stories players tell themselves are stories they think about and love,” Howard said.

In Starfield, Bethesda really “knows” how the game’s fellow characters feel about your character. The game will also have an Oblivion-like dialogue persuasion system, where players must weigh the risks of what they say to other characters to get the desired outcome. “We don’t want it to be a system that has absolutely correct claims,” Shen said.

In some ways, StarCraft is a game about the universe, and Howard said he expects players to bring big questions about the nature of their place in the universe: “At the end of the game, we want players to Telling about your own journey, but looking back…we’re asking the big questions. Why are we all here? Where is it? What’s next for humanity?

Additional episodes of Into the Starfield will be released in the coming months.

Starfield is scheduled to release on Xbox Series X|S and PC on November 11, 2022. Like all first-party Microsoft games, it will be available on day one of Xbox Game Pass.

After Starfield, Bethesda Game Studios will release The Elder Scrolls VI at some point in the future. No release date has been announced, and we haven’t seen any gameplay so far.
