Steam Deck 2 – release date, price, specs and performance

Valve may have released “the best handheld yet,” as we coined in our Steam Deck review, but the company is already hard at work on Steam Deck 2. Given how many people are apparently on Deck, pre-orders have pushed the expected availability of the device back to “beyond the second quarter” of this year. However, time will tell how many upgrades it will offer and whether it will stand up to rivals like the Ayaneo Next.
Valve co-founder and president Gabe Newell casually confirmed the existence of Steam Deck 2 in an interview with Edge Magazine, saying the release of the company’s handheld gaming PC would “help frame our thinking about Deck 2.” Newell elaborated that the design of the new Deck will focus on leveraging “what mobile devices offer us beyond what a traditional desktop or laptop gaming environment can offer.”
Unfortunately, Valve keeps details of its Washington office strictly private. However, we do have some thoughts on how Steam Deck 2’s specs compare to the company’s current portables.

Steam Deck 2 release date
Given that Valve just launched its first Steam Deck, we shouldn’t expect a Steam Deck 2 release date to come anytime soon. However, that doesn’t mean we won’t see improved versions of the existing Deck in the near future, similar to how Nintendo updated its Switch lineup with OLED models.
Steam Deck 2 Prices
Gabe Newell has previously described the $399/£349 MSRP for the base model of Steam Deck as “painful”, so Steam Deck 2 will likely cost more, especially given the continued rise in the price of materials needed to make PC components. However, Valve may be able to offset the lower profit margins on the entry-level Steam Deck 2 model by producing more high-spec variants.
Deck’s “most popular SKUs are the most expensive,” Newell told Edge Magazine. He said the company is deciphering the need for this concentration because customers are saying, “We want a more expensive version, in horsepower capacity or whatever.” So we could see a premium version of Steam Deck 2 outpacing what’s already available $649/£569 cap.
Steam Deck 2 Specifications
There’s no official word or any substantial leaks on the Steam Deck 2 specs, but we can make some educated guesses based on the makeup of the existing deck. By increasing the battery capacity beyond 40Whr, the current Deck’s battery life is greatly improved and helps address one of the core complaints.
An OLED or QD-OLED display would offer higher color accuracy than current IPS LCD panels, while also allowing Valve to significantly reduce the bezels around the screen. They can upgrade the device’s APU to a Zen 3-based Ryzen 6000 CPU for more processing power, up from the custom Zen 2 currently used in portable PCs.
Steam Deck 2 Performance
There won’t be any official or leaked performance benchmarks for Steam Deck 2 until we get closer to its release date. So, at least we’d like to see Valve improve in battery life and gaming performance compared to current decks. Either way, playing video games on Steam Deck 2 requires less guesswork, as compatibility levels for more Steam games should be recorded.
