Team17 announces Worm NFTs, but they won’t show up in the actual game

Team17, an indie game publisher best known for its Worms franchise, announced a new series of NFTs today, but it clarified that they won’t be available in its actual games after a quick backlash. In fact, some of the company’s own employees were apparently unaware of the news before it was made public.

MetaWorms, a collaboration between Team17 and Reality Gaming Group, is described on its official website as a “generating NFT art project” that includes a spinning image of a very shiny Worms character. Using a “sidechain” of the popular Ethereum blockchain, Team17 says it doesn’t use as much energy as other NFTs, and some of the proceeds go to its Refeed Farms program.

Ethereum will gradually adopt a “proof-of-stake” system to verify transactions in 2022. This is a shift from “Proof of Work”, which has a much higher environmental cost and is largely responsible for why you’re having such a hard time finding GPUs.

According to Eurogamer, the news came as a surprise to staff, with some people who knew ahead of time expressing disapproval. However, there are no plans to actually bring the art to the game.

“Team17 is licensing the Worms brand to our newest third-party partner so they can create collectible digital artwork based on one of the most popular IPs in indie gaming in a similar way to existing physical merchandise,” Team 17 told Eurogamer, adding that there are no plans to add NFTs to “any of its indie game label titles.”

This isn’t the first time we’ve seen NFT initiatives come under fire in the gaming industry. Ubisoft, which launched the Quartz platform and implemented NFTs in Ghost Recon Breakpoint, later hinted that players didn’t understand why they wanted them. Elsewhere, celebrities planning to launch NFTs, such as Troy Baker, and for some reason, Home Improvement’s Richard KahnThe direction has been reversed.
