The 12 best co-op games for Valentine’s Day

Valentine’s Day is fast approaching, and one of the best ways to spend a good night is playing couch co-op. To that end, we’ve rounded up the best games for couples to play on Valentine’s Day, which are, of course, great games you’ll want to play together any night of the year. For the purposes of this roundup, we’ve focused on video games that offer local multiplayer so you can snuggle up on the couch while you play.

We recognize that in some couples, one may experience more gaming than the other, so keep that in mind when choosing games. None of the titles we’ve included here are particularly strenuous, but some of them may be better suited to those already used to using controllers. (If you find yourself needing more options, we have a separate game guide for people who don’t usually play games.)

Platforms: Switch, PlayStation, Xbox, PC, Android, iOS

If your partner is addicted to Animal Crossing: New Horizons, let me introduce another game they will love: Stardew Valley. Launched in 2015, this country life RPG shares many of the same appeals as Nintendo’s social sim series, while offering more depth in terms of relationships and activities. While you might think of Stardew Valley as just a farming sim, this wildly popular game is also about friendship and romance with an NPC of your choice. Like you might be doing this Valentine’s Day, the game makes you think about what gift your partner would best respond to, and even if you’re married to your chosen character, you still need to cherish them if you want to keep their attention , which is a pretty solid piece of information about relationships.

Stardew Valley is great as a single-player game, but it also has an excellent multiplayer mode so you can play local or online co-op with your sweetheart. The recent 1.5 update also added local split-screen co-op, so you can share your TV while you play. Finally, you can download Stardew Valley on almost any platform and start playing right away, but a physical version is also available, which could be a great gift to wrap up and surprise them on Valentine’s Day.

While it may be a bit odd to experience It Takes Two’s storyline with your partner — it follows a couple on the brink of divorce — it’s the best example of a truly cooperative game on this list. Developed by Hazelight Studios, It Takes Two can only be played in co-op, either online or on the couch. After their daughter looked up the Book of Love and shed tears, Cody and May woke up to find them transformed into dolls. From there, you and your partner must navigate the now oversized house and surrounding property as a team. When we say as a team, we mean it. Many platforming sequences and puzzles require teamwork using each character’s unique abilities.

It Takes Two is one of the smartest platformers out there, but it also has great combat and enemy design. You’ll find yourself facing off against a variety of strange bosses, including giant insects, vacuum cleaners, and toolboxes. Available on Game Pass it takes two.

One of the newer games on this list, Haven is a sci-fi love story about a couple who flee their home and escape to an empty planet together. You and your partner can play together as Yu and Kay, who use anti-gravity boots to glide around the strange planet (called Source) using “streamlines”. During these expeditions, you’ll gather resources and engage hostile creatures in turn-based combat. Traveling around the globe in a local co-op takes a bit of getting used to and some interaction with the owner – my partner and I found that taking turns being the “leader” who chooses the direction we explore works well.

When they’re not exploring Source, Yu and Kay can relax in Nest (their spaceship), where they can cook, bathe, heal, and craft items. But while Haven’s gameplay is fun, its depiction of the relationship between Yu and Kay is where the game shines. It’s rare for a game to portray mature, committed relationships in such an authentic and intimate way. For this reason, Haven is truly one of the best games for couples to play together, and luckily for Xbox owners, it’s available through Xbox Game Pass.

While you play as a hot dad trying to romance other hot dads, a dating sim might not sound like a game you Want to play with your significant other on Valentine’s Day, this is actually the perfect game to play with your partner. It’s not technically couch co-op, but whether you’re taking turns playing with the controllers or sitting down and commenting alone, it’s still fun to play this visual novel together. Together, you can design your own handsome dad, decide which handsome bachelor to woo, go on dates, and discover multiple endings based on the dialogue options you choose along the way. However, it’s not all flirting and puns. Dream Daddy also has a very sweet storyline about parenting and some memorable characters you won’t soon forget.

Platform: Nintendo Switch

Without a doubt, Super Mario Odyssey is one of the best games you can own on the Nintendo Switch — it even earned a rare 10/10 in GameSpot’s review. Not only is it a rich, detailed Mario Bros game with a variety of challenges and puzzles, customization options, and more; it also has an excellent co-op mode. Playing Super Mario Odyssey with your significant other is a lot of fun. One player will control Mario and perform the actual platforming, while the other player will control Cappy, zooming around to collect items and attack enemies. Cappy is great for players with less gaming experience, but no matter which character you control, playing through the colorful levels of Super Mario Odyssey together is the perfect activity and a great gift for any couple.

See how you and your love will get stranded in the wilderness in Don’t Starve Together, a survival game with Tim Burton-esque visuals. Don’t Starve’s standalone multiplayer expansion thrusts you into a hostile world full of strange creatures and dangers, where you must work with your buddies to gather resources, craft items, and create structures to keep yourself safe. If relationships are all about protecting each other and working together, Don’t Starve Together is the perfect game to buy for your significant other this Valentine’s Day.

In this colorful couch co-op adventure, you and your buddies will explore the galaxy as LOVERS (which stands for the League of Very Empathetic Spacemen Rescue), working as a team to fight the evil forces of anti-love and rescue the adorable space bunnies. Together you must control the ship, attack with turrets and lasers, defend with shields, and navigate the environment with thrusters. It’s a game that can get very busy quickly and will definitely test your communication skills, but it’s also a blast. There’s also a single-player mode where you can get help from AI pets, which can be joined by up to four players.

Platform: Switch, PlayStation, Xbox, PC

On the surface, Overcooked is a cute game about meal prep, but it requires a lot of coordination to get high stars in its timed, chaotic kitchen levels. Overcooked requires a similar strategy to Lovers in Dangerous Time: tasks must be delegated, and communication must be made quickly and clearly in order to pass the obstacles of the level and submit enough food in time. If you love cooking together IRL and can handle the challenge, Overcooked is the perfect game to play as a couple this Valentine’s Day.

For those with a PS5 or Xbox Series X|S, the Overcooked: All You Can Eat series is the way to go. It gives you a 4K remake of Overcooked, Overcooked 2 and all DLC, and also includes a new kitchen, chef and more accessibility options.

Mario Kart is the ultimate party game, and you can experience the final version of Mario Kart 8 on Nintendo Switch. The popular racing game allows up to four players to race in local split-screen multiplayer, and it adds new characters to the roster, such as Inkling Girl and Inkling Boy from Splatoon. Mario Kart is the type of game that players of any skill level will enjoy, but be warned – it’s sure to bring out your buddy’s competitive edge.
