A decade ago, smart money said that mobile games would replace consoles as gamers increasingly turned to their phones for convenient fun. But, it’s 2022, and Xbox, PlayStation, and Nintendo are all still going strong. Paradoxically, the mobile market has never been larger, with millions of players using their phones to play a wide variety of games, including portable versions of the world’s most popular multiplayer games such as Call of Duty, Fortnite, Genshin Impact and PUBG .
However, none of these games are on this list. Instead, we try to choose games that are easy to pick up and play on and playable without a controller. Because who wants to carry an Xbox One controller with them on the bus? Read on for our pick of the 25 best mobile games on iOS and/or Android, listed in alphabetical order.

It’s easy to understand among us – it’s social deception in space! – but that doesn’t mean tricking your friends is easy. At the start of a round, each innocent player has a task they must complete, while the impostor has no task but must try to appear innocent. All the while, every impostor has been plotting a plan to kill their co-workers without being detected. When a body is found, everyone gets together to decide who they should throw out of the airlock. Pray it’s not you. Despite being released in 2018, Among Us is one of the hottest titles of 2020, buoyed by a global pandemic that has kept us apart. The game was so popular that Congresswoman Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez and Ilhan Omar streamed the game on Twitch, and Epic borrowed it from Fortnite’s recently added “Impostors” mode. If you’re interested in checking it out, the game is free on iOS and Android, and just $5 on Steam and Nintendo Switch.

Long-term strategy series are often associated with PCs. But with solid touch controls, Civilization VI on iOS and Android is a valid port that lets you take the fate of the world in your hands…or in your pocket. Firaxis first tested the waters with the iPad version, but now you can play the acclaimed 4X game on basically any latest iOS or Android device. If you’ve never played the series before, the gist is simple: you choose a nation to lead the ages, playing as its ruler. Traits vary from country to country and from leader to leader. As you play, you’ll do what every nation in history has done: build cities and get involved in war. But your playstyle and the resources you acquire determine what characteristics, strengths, and weaknesses your nation presents as you play. Before it made the 2019 Apple Arcade stand out, with the gorgeous playable pop album Sayonara Wild Hearts, developer Simogo created Device 6, a gorgeous playable noir novel. This stylish text-adventure puts players in the role of Ana, a woman with amnesia who tries to figure out who she is and why she wakes up to find herself on a mysterious island. All of this is presented in text, but the Device 6’s presentation is very good, and it manages to make the written text visually appealing as the text moves across the screen to create a sense of space. For example, words might run diagonally down to suggest that our protagonist is going down a flight of stairs, or the page might be turned upside down. Combine that with a moody jazz soundtrack and a graphic style that has the look of a typical novel or e-reader, and play it according to the player’s expectations of how the text should behave, and you’ve got a smart, sticky puzzle game to play, And, finally, solved.

This extremely clever roguelike is exactly what it says on the tin: it’s a game where you play as a little guy trying to stay alive while descending into a deeper well. The game has a simple aesthetic (black, white and red) that belies an incredibly elegant design. As Game Maker’s Toolkit’s Mark Brown says in his great video about games, Downwell embodies Shigeru Miyamoto’s famous quote: “A good idea doesn’t solve one problem, it solves many problems at once.” In Downwell , which means the gun boots you use to shoot enemies are also your primary means of slowing and controlling your descent and clearing the path of destructible obstacles. This is just one example of the economical design shown by Downwell. If this sounds a bit too theoretical, let’s say it: the touch controls feel great and intuitive, and it’s playable enough to turn it on and off on my phone for the past five years. A gorgeous game about love, loss, and letting go, Florence is a romantic drama that uses very few words to tell its story. Instead of verbal language, Florence relies on touch-based mechanics and simple puzzles to silently express the joy of falling in and out of love. Experience protagonist Florence Yeoh falling in love with a musician named Krish with a beautifully hand-drawn aesthetic and composer Kevin Penkin’s lovely and somber soundtrack The story is surprising. Their relationship comes into play in small smart mini-games, like when you have to piece a puzzle together to suggest a conversation, or choose where to place items around an apartment after a couple has moved in together. Even though the game could be done in 45 minutes, Florence managed to pull off a game in such a short time.
Go game (Hitman Go, Lara Croft Go, Deus Ex Go)

The Go series of mobile games takes characters from publisher Square Enix’s Western Stables (Agent 47, Lara Croft from Tomb Raider, and Adam Jensen from Deus Ex) and puts them together. Scale down to the size of a board game miniature. These engrossing mobile games place our heroes in bite-sized levels and incorporate the basics of each series into the world of turn-based puzzle games. For example, during his PC and console outings, Agent 47 can use coins to distract guards. In Hitman Go, however, this action has to be done with laser-like precision to ensure the defender can’t get back to his position before you slip away. The game of Go is an excellent distillation experiment – digging deep into the core of the experience and trying to keep that essence while transforming it into a different genre. Each level is small enough that you can (theoretically) complete one or more during your bus ride, but the mind-bending puzzles can keep you stuck for longer. See our Deus Ex Go review.

According to the Good Sudoku website, designers Zach Gage and Jake Schlesinger had one goal in mind when designing the AI to tackle familiar Japanese logic games: “to help you learn and love this classic game.” To that end, the game has powerful hints System, with a clear presentation of difficulty levels and the ability to practice the techniques required for each difficulty level individually, as well as smart adjustments designed to eliminate distracting little tasks: play Sudoku. There are also many Sudoku games to play – the game contains over 70,000 Sudoku puzzles. Plus, if you’re confident in your skills, Good Sudoku also offers global leaderboards so you can see how you stack up against players around the world. Perhaps most impressively, Good Sudoku lets you load external Sudoku puzzles and play them in-game, and a hint system can even help.

With a Cartoon Network-inspired aesthetic, Grindstone is instantly visually appealing. However, it is the violent puzzle game from the heart that brings players back. (I don’t know how many times I’ve heard game reviewers say they’ve been paying for an Apple Arcade subscription just to keep playing Grindstone. There are plenty of other good games out there though!). Players control a brutal warrior named George, who must venture into monster-infested mines and kill the beasts for loot. The monsters in question are color coded and arranged on a Candy Crush style board. Once our barbarian friend starts slicing and dicing, he can only attack monsters of the same color. Unless, that is, he hits a gem, which allows him to switch to another color and start killing minions all over again. When he does, they explode in a burst of colorful guts. This is basically the match-3 puzzle game you know, but the puyo puyos and candies have been replaced by bloody pinatas. Grindstone is one of the best Apple Arcade games.

Blizzard’s collectible card game is a lot of fun, even if you have zero interest in the World of Warcraft it’s in. Featuring 10 hero classes, each with their own unique cards, Hearthstone is a deep and irresistible digital card game that feels incredibly comfortable at the same time. While the game is free to play, you can spend money to purchase additional cards to expand and improve your deck. Touch the circle to win! It may seem like an odd proposition, but Hundreds makes it endlessly compelling. This is a fun puzzle game where each circle on the screen has a value that increases or decreases depending on its size. When you touch the circle, it gets bigger and the number grows with it. Your goal is to make the sum of the numbers in all circles equal to 100. However, it is crucial that the circles do not overlap, and if they do, you have to start the puzzle from scratch. In keeping with the theme, there are 100 levels to play. When you’re all done, infinite mode unlocks because infinite is better than 100; that’s just math.

One of the best indie games of all time, Playdead’s Inside is a horror movie masterpiece that plays just as well on mobile as it does on PS4. The game begins with a young boy running out of dark bushes and embarking on a trek that will take him through murky forests, dystopian cityscapes, flooded cave networks, and sprawling underground labs. You will run, jump and solve puzzles as you progress. If it sounds like we’re a little wary, it’s because we are. Inside is an amazing game, the less you know, the better.

A hidden object game with a hilarious twist, Mom’s Hide Me game casts players into a character in a predicament that may be familiar: their mom wants them to stop playing so many video games and hides their handheld console. In each new level, players need to figure out how to get their console back while carefully avoiding their mom. This starts out fairly simple – you need to use a ladder to climb up and retrieve your console from above the window – but quickly gets ridiculous.
