The Nintendo 3DS improves upon the perfect foundation of the DS, adding more features, a consistently powerful library and hardware upgrades to make gaming on Nintendo’s handheld console feel better than ever. While the 3D gimmick was largely eliminated after a few years on the market, the 3DS was once Nintendo’s main presence in the gaming market. As usual, Nintendo went through multiple iterations on the 3DS, with major releases like the 3DS XL, 2DS, and 2DS XL. The 3DS has a huge library of great games, and we’ve decided to round up the 20 best 3DS games (in alphabetical order).
While it may have been replaced by the Nintendo Switch in 2017, the 3DS is still one of the best consoles Nintendo has ever made, and it’s well worth checking out if you have the chance to get it at a reasonable price. The combat system is undoubtedly the biggest highlight, with the mix encouraging players to take risks in exchange for great rewards. Whether you play discreetly with the default move options or opt for the drastic method of chaining moves together with the Brave option, Bravely Default’s hand-to-hand combat is a deep and flexible strategy associated with a fun job system.
Modern twists collide with a fairly traditional JRPG story, and Bravely Default easily earns its reputation as the best RPG on the 3DS.

Kid Icarus: Uprising is a huge pleasure finding its sweet spot, one of the best looking games on the 3DS, and its gameplay matches its visuals. The tightly built levels really add nuance and excitement to the game’s flight sequences, and the multiplayer battles are a fascinating extension of these game concepts, giving you free and team-based chaos.
Kid Icarus: Uprising exists as not only a celebration of the original 1987 game, but also the best return of Nintendo’s little angels that fans could hope for.

Its progressive teaching method coupled with a generous learning curve makes it not only a fun game, but an inspiring game to pursue a career on the greens.

Another day, Mario and Luigi embark on another adventure in the Mushroom Kingdom, but this time with the help of their nemesis Bowser! With Princess Peach’s voice stolen, the entry in this long-running series is a remake of the Game Boy Advance classic. Reborn on the 3DS, Mario & Luigi: A Superstar Saga is completely remastered from the ground up. The new paint coat shows just how old the original game’s formula is, and with some clever tweaks, it’s better than ever. If you need to remind you how timeless Mario games are, this amazing RPG is the perfect example.

Metroid: Samus Returns
Metroid: Samus Returns isn’t what the infamous bounty hunter would call a groundbreaking adventure, but with sophisticated gameplay mechanics drawn from decades of experience and previous games, it doesn’t need to be. Developer Mercury Steam joined Metroid’s saga in 2017, capturing the spirit of what makes the series special. Although it’s a remake of Metroid II (released on the Game Boy), it has a ton of new content and feels very fresh. Metroid: Samus Returns is a sprawling adventure filled with high-intensity action moments, awesome exploration, and a positive attitude.
An excellent 2D action game with great Metroid characteristics, the return of Samus is exactly what fans have been waiting for. If you end up enjoying Metroid Dread on Switch, it’s worth checking back for Mercury Steam’s first Metroid game.

Before Monster Hunter’s massive popularity in Monster Hunter World, Capcom’s unique line of action RPGs existed primarily on handheld Nintendo devices. Monster Hunter 4: Ultimate stands out the most. Bringing all of Monster Hunter’s iconic beasts, bosses, and crafting, this particular iteration is also a more accessible game, featuring a ridiculously meaty single-player campaign and a four-player hunting party feature in online multiplayer.
With deep combat and a list of activities to ensure you’ll never get bored, Monster Hunter 4: Definitive Edition is a triumph of 3DS content and quality that raises the bar for larger games on pocket handheld devices. Plus, who doesn’t have a Palico Chun Li or Blanca dressed as Street Fighter? Math check.

Today, developer Game Freak is mostly known for its Pokemon series, but between new releases in the series, the studio has managed to put out a fascinating game or two. Pocket Card Jockey is one such example, as Game Freak managed to combine the thrill of high-speed equestrian pursuits with a game of poker that wasn’t exactly known for running at speed. Yet somehow, the fusion of these two very different forms of entertainment resulted in an addictive game called Pocket Card Jockey.
What’s great about the Pocket Card Jockey is its blend of stacking cards, improving thoroughbred racing, and unleashing its tactical nature on time-critical tracks. This leads to an intense solitaire game culminating in a climax where you have to use whatever momentum you’ve built up on the track to push your steed to the finish line. Challenging and exciting, Pocket Card Jockey is one of Game Freak’s little gems in the popular Pokemon game.

The Pokemon games of the Nintendo DS generation have largely retained the 2D essence that has shaped the series’ unique visual aesthetic since the Game Boy days, but Pokemon X and Y are a confident step into the third dimension on the Nintendo 3DS. With a French-influenced map, dozens of new Pokemon, and another dastardly syndicate operating in the Kalos region, Pokemon X and Y is a major leap forward for the series, with some notable changes to gameplay and communications.
