While former PlayStation exclusives are notorious for pushing the PS4’s hardware to its limits, you don’t need the best graphics card to make Kratos look as photogenic as ever. Best God of War Graphics Presets

If you’re as excited to embark on a Nordic adventure as Atreus, there’s no shame in choosing the best God of War graphics presets, especially since using presets can also help establish performance benchmarks for modifying individual settings. Some gains can easily be gained with a few simple tweaks, so we recommend taking a closer look at our detailed setup breakdown.

We think a high preset is the ideal starting point for most players, as you’ll want to choose some high settings anyway to unlock higher resolution shadows, improved screen space reflections, and the ambient occlusion that comes with this port enhanced. Even better, AMD FSR and Nvidia DLSS making God of War look and run its best is far from a daunting task.

While the Ultra preset offers the best visual experience, we don’t think it offers enough improvement over High to warrant its 7% performance cost. Additionally, many graphics cards can struggle to meet their steep VRAM requirements. If High is too much for your PC, dropping to the original preset can boost your fps by as much as 10%, and it will make God of War look as good as it does on a PlayStation console. The low preset can help improve performance by 7% compared to the original and still make the game look good overall, but we only recommend it as a last resort.

Since God of War does not have its own benchmarks, we used a combination of in-engine cutscenes and game scenes as a testing ground to determine our recommended settings. So, without further ado, here’s our breakdown of the potential performance impact of each setting, in order from largest to smallest:

The easiest way to increase frame rate in God of War is to use NVIDIA DLSS or AMD FSR upgrade. If you have an RTX GPU, Nvidia DLSS is definitely a no-brainer, but we recommend getting as close to the “Quality” preset as possible. In our tests at 4K with the Ultra setting, Quality mode boosted performance by an astonishing 37%. There was an even bigger gain, Ultra Performance boosted our fps by 88%, but this introduced very distracting artifacts. For users with Radeon graphics cards, FSR in Ultra Quality improved our average performance by 28%, while Performance Mode improved it by 78%.

This reflection Settings change the resolution and sample rate of dynamic object reflections, such as character models, particle effects, and select environment details such as fire and some other light sources. Turning on reflections with the Original preset affects the frame rate by about 8%, but High costs only a slightly higher 9%. Upgrading to Ultra takes 14% of performance, and Ultra+ reduces the game’s frame rate by 24%. High is the obvious choice here, not only because it doesn’t cost more than Original, but it’s also the minimum preset needed to enable PC-exclusive improved screen-space reflections.

shadowAs with reflections, shadows of dynamic objects are only affected by changing resolution and filtering. Upgrading from Low to Original costs about 3%, but if you have 175MB of VRAM available, High affects fps to the same degree, with a noticeable difference in shadow detail. The Ultra requires another 245MB of VRAM and is unquestionably sharp, but requires you to sacrifice another 7% of potential frame rate. Our advice to most people is to go for the High, but if you have enough horsepower, the Ultra isn’t exactly a write-off.

keep going Ambient Occlusion, which modifies the quality of self-shadowing, it appears that the most laborious settings in God of War are those that offer substantial improvements to its console-level presets. Switching from completely disabled to raw drops the fps by about 4%. However, if you want to enjoy the benefits of GTAO (ground-truth ambient occlusion) and SSDO (screen space directional occlusion), you need to switch to high and give up 9% performance. Despite its high cost, we recommend High if your system can handle it, as it really adds depth to many of the game’s beautiful locations.

Anisotropic filter Sets the quality of texture filtering. This setting usually doesn’t have much of an impact on performance, but in God of War it was an odd burden for the significantly improved visuals it provided. Ultra is naturally the heaviest and best looking preset, but its fps usage is just over 5%. Similar to Ambient Occlusion, we urge most people to adjust this setting, as lowering to raw mode will only give you a small 1% frame rate boost, and lowering it will only add too much to God of War’s awesome environments. Many flaws.

This atmosphere The settings control the quality of the dynamic fog you often encounter on your journeys in Midgard and other frigid realms. For the PlayStation experience, the original preset costs 2% more than Low. However, just over 3% higher is our personal preference. The Ultra wasn’t much stronger, but dropped the frame rate by almost 6%, not much of an improvement over the High. It’s worth noting that this setup also takes up additional VRAM, up to 321MB.

Coming to the least performance-intensive setting in the God of War graphics suite, Model quality Self-explanatory, the maximum fps cost using the Ultra preset is 4%. Since High costs 3%, we’d go with Ultra, but if you need to squeeze out some extra frames, Original still looks great.

the level you set texture quality to largely depends on your resolution and the available VRAM of your GPU. So other than pushing this setting as high as possible without running out of graphics card memory (there’s a counter in the bottom right that changes dynamically as you edit the setting), we can’t make general recommendations here. Upgrading from Min to Ultra will increase VRAM usage by 2,560MB (2.5GB) in some cases, but the asking price of 1,707MB is more reasonable.

God of War Accessibility Settings

God of War’s secondary menu contains settings that affect input methods for various game mechanics, in addition to more typical options designed to help relieve motion sickness and assist players with hearing or vision impairments.

Fast time event inputs, sprints and stun grabs can be toggled between taps and holds, and players can also choose to chisel doors through the game by pressing a single button instead of the default “precise” input. It is also possible to have Kratos sprint automatically when the direction of movement is detected, and use the Auto Sprint Delay slider to allow further customization. You can set the reticle to appear only when aiming or to remain active at all times.

You can also increase the text size by a factor of 10, but unfortunately this is limited to specific text and menu elements. In addition to the subtitle speaker labels that will appear next to the dialogue, include the subtitle background. You can configure or even turn off ambient camera roll and camera shake during gameplay, but none of these options affect God of War cutscenes.

We’re happy to report that you can change the keybindings for all games while using the mouse and keyboard. Even better, you can play games entirely with a keyboard instead of a mouse, if you want. Xbox and PlayStation controllers are also supported, including DualSense, but there is no rebind support for these peripherals.

Overall, we’re happy to report that Santa Monica Studio and Jetpack Interactive offer a solid PC port of console classics. While it’s a shame there’s no ray tracing to make God of War look more like God of War, the options available on PC offer some easy ways to improve performance and visuals compared to the original PlayStation demo.
