Slashing and slashing through hordes of enemies with an oversized sword in hand is one of the greatest joys of video games. Swordplay can go for realism in battles and scenarios, or it can start to become an absurd fantasy of power – there are no hard and fast rules here, it’s all pretty exciting.
So given it’s an extremely broad genre, you might have a hard time finding the best of them. That’s why we’ve put together a handy list of swordplay games of all genres, from 2D co-op games and hack ‘n’ slash action games to VR rhythm games and expanding sandbox RPGs.

For For Honor eschews any attempt at historical authenticity with a deadliest approach to warriors, allowing you to pit samurai, vikings, knights and martial arts warriors against each other and see what happens.
The results are often pretty entertaining, and while the premise might seem silly to Mordhau or Chivalry players, there’s a lot of depth to its combat system and unique heroes. Succumb to its charm and you might be surprised.
ghost walker
Ghostrunner’s vicious combat is a fast and furious thrill, with your instakill blows leading to ridiculous OTT gory outbursts. It all helps create the ultimate cyberpunk ninja experience as you can expertly run, slide and dance between bullets with ease.
While close combat is deliberately kept straight, it’s still very satisfying to pull off some impossible parkour and get the critical hit. Our full Ghostrunner review calls it “Titanfall vs. Hotline Miami,” if that gives you any indication of how intense it can get.
Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance
Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance is nothing like its stealthy predecessor, a lightning fast, platinum-developed action game with some of the best hack and slash around. As a pouting robot Raiden, you’ll fight your way through absurd plots and tons of killer boss fights, all while mastering the art of the blade.
It’s somewhere between Bayonetta and Devil May Cry, though Raiden’s ability to slow down crawling and dissect his enemies is a memorable (and rather gross) addition. Plus, you can cut nearby cars into small pieces – it’s a lot of fun.
chivalry 2
If you want heavy, extremely violent medieval swordsmanship, then Chivalry 2 is definitely your favorite. It’s equally good at massively multiplayer battles, and while the biggest fights can be a little unruly, the game aggressively soars when the stars align and everything works. Compete with up to 64 players, and mercenaries can fight alongside a team to raid a castle together.
The close quarters of Chivalry 2 do take some getting used to, but as you master your preferred fighting style comes a greater sense of progress. Nidhogg 2
Nidhogg 2’s swordplay requires experimentation and quick thinking, especially since your player-controlled nemesis might start bombarding you with arrows or choose to throw daggers at you in the face. There is no room for chivalry in its sensual, repulsive world.
However, spam attacks and frontal attacks can be a recipe for disaster, so waiting a bit to read or throw off your opponent makes all the difference. You also have to take into account that a simple stabbing with your sword is enough to kill them, which makes untelegraphed moves especially effective. Despite its vulgar style, there’s clearly a lot of hidden depth to Nidhogg 2’s hectic action.
Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice
Compared to FromSoftware’s Dark Souls series, Sekiro’s blazingly fast hack ‘n’ slash swordfighting fights can feel confining at first, but its greater focus on reading opponents and acting accordingly makes for a smoother combat system , more ruthless.
Sometimes, as you expertly flow from one move to the next with the greatest flair, you’ll fall into a rhythm-action trance. Huge demons and samurai masters can’t compare to clear heads and good timing.
Despite the difficulty offered, it should serve as a welcome entry point into the wider world of FromSoftware with a friendlier respawn mechanic. At least you won’t get lost in this one, as long as you overhear enemy conversations and keep an eye out for the myriad environmental cues.
Warhammer: Plague 2
Taking inspiration from games like Left 4 Dead, Warhammer: Vermintide 2 lets you team up with a few buddies to battle through carefully crafted levels full of repulsive rat people. Few co-op games offer as much as this one — and frankly, there’s a lot to see, unlock, and destroy.
Thanks to the game’s bloody swordplay and diverse arsenal, you’ll always have fun, certainly not just limited to swords. It’s a solid mouse game (click if you dare), and its post-launch support has been great.
beat saber
Beat Saber doesn’t see you face off against an opposing swordsman, but its brand of rhythmic action cuts is just as strong. As a VR game, it’s very engaging and exciting for a lot longer than you might expect, and custom levels help greatly expand its long-term appeal.
It’s easy to get carried away in the present or get caught up in a satisfying flow. Just don’t think about how silly you look when you’re playing. Simple as it may be, it’s still easily one of the best rhythm games on PC.
Kingdom Come: Deliverance
You can easily spend hours in Warhorse’s simulation-heavy RPG game Kingdom Come: Deliverance without having to draw your scabbard. That said, it only adds to the intensity and importance of your deadliest battle against medieval Bohemia.
So being caught off guard by a bunch of tattered bandits is something to celebrate, as encounters like this give you a chance to hone and show off your swordsmanship skills. Like every system in Kingdom Come, its tactical combat takes a while to get used to — it’s purposely awkward at first — but stick with it, and you’ll be beating the armored killer in style in no time.
doom forever
Now, we know what you’re thinking. Considering it’s an FPS game, Doom Eternal might not be the most obvious choice on this list of best sword games. That being said, its Crucible Power Sword is steeped in history. From the moment you restore your blade, it’s clear that the Crucible is no ordinary weapon.
It functions as an instakill super that can rip the toughest demons into chunks. Honestly, when things get a little too busy, it’s the perfect way to cut down on enemy teams, and it feels great to swing, like the ultimate lightsaber.
