This year’s Elder Scrolls Online Adventure will take players to an unprecedented location with a new High Island chapter, all the way deep into a culture not yet explored in detail in the lore.

The upcoming year-long adventure is called Legacy of Brittany and will include multiple new DLC content throughout 2022. The biggest addition to Legacy of Brittany is the new High Island chapter. Legacy of Brittany will see players travel to the Systres Archipelago, an island region inspired by the Mediterranean Sea and home to the High Isle.

A story of political intrigue awaits players on the island. Representatives of the three factions that fought in the game’s Three Flags War have come to discuss the terms of peace on the island’s escape, but a secret society called the Ascendant Order has other plans. Players will unravel the mysteries, motivations and leaders of the Ascension Order in a story that The Elder Scrolls Online Creative Director Rich Lambert describes as a return to the roots of the Elder Scrolls franchise.

“It’s definitely a more political storyline than a cosmic demon lord that will invade, take over and enslave everyone,” Lambert said. “It’s a whole new take, and it’s something we haven’t done in a long time. , which is something we really want to dig into and get back to our roots.”

Breton culture, inspired by feudal European society, is no doubt familiar to fans of Western medieval fantasy, populated by nobles and ladies, knights in shining armor and imposing castles. While this may sound like something many fantasy fans have seen before, Lambert emphasizes that Takashimaya and Brittany culture still have the signature style of The Elder Scrolls.

“It’s the Elder Scrolls angle,” he said. “There isn’t a single source of truth. We’re definitely focusing more on politics and showing that. It’s something new in The Elder Scrolls, and the Bretons and their culture have never really been explored before.”

Fans of the franchise have been debating the setting of The Elder Scrolls VI endlessly, with some suggesting that based on the game’s original trailer, it was centered on the High Rock province of Brittany (hammer drop is another possibility). If that’s the case, High Isle could be stepping on some toes on whatever Bethesda Game Studios is working on. While Lambert didn’t have much to say on the topic, he did talk about how ZeniMax Online is working closely with Bethesda Game Studios to keep the world and lore of the Elder Scrolls universe consistent.

“We can have frank discussions,” Lambert said. “‘Hey, here’s what we think, here’s what we want to do. Here’s why. Steering us in the right direction, making sure we don’t conflict with legends or whatever.’ They worked closely with us, Helping us navigate these areas is fantastic.”

While High Isle will bring all the usual stuff included in the new chapters—new public dungeons, world events, crypts, and more—it will also introduce a whole new distraction in Tamriel’s world: a Playable card game.

Called Tales of Tribute, the card game is a resource-building game focused on strategy. Each player chooses two decks and shuffles them all. Players then play from a shared pool of cards to build up resources and earn more victory points than their opponents. Because the decks are shuffled together, players who have unlocked or upgraded more cards will not have a significant advantage over new players. Lambert said Tales of Tribute was inspired less by collectible card games and more from games you might play in a tavern or bar while you wait for your friends to show up or just kill time.

“What do you do when you’re waiting on a boat, or what do you do when you’re sitting in a bar drinking?” Lambert said. “You play games, you know? That’s an inspiration.”

Players will be able to challenge each other directly in Tales of Tribute or in taverns, and players who want to find opponents quickly can also use the game’s group finder system to find matches. There’s also a single-player component with a unique Tales of Tribute storyline where players can challenge various NPCs around the world. Tales of Tribute will have its own rewards for players to unlock through the game, including new decks, upgraded cards, and items outside of the card game, such as housing items, cosmetics, crafting materials, and more. Lambert said there are 12 decks to collect, and players can get four decks after completing the card game tutorial.

Of course, the launch is just the beginning, and Lambert said the team will continue to add more cards and decks if there is a demand from the community. Lambert said ZeniMax Online continues to support a variety of game systems that are popular with players, such as the game’s Antiquities and Companion systems, and Tales of Tribute is no exception. Speaking of companion systems, Legacy of Breton will introduce two new recruitable companions for players to team up in the form of Ember and Isobel. Ember is a street-smart Khajiit with “a knack for magic,” while Isobel is an aspiring Breton knight.

Overall, Lambert said, High Island includes about 30 hours of new quest content, including side stories where players can learn more about Breton culture and lore. As with other ESO chapters, players don’t need to flip through old content to experience High Isle. Players can jump right in and start leveling up with the latest chapters.

“There’s really something here for all types of players, and we’re obviously very excited about the trading card game,” Lambert said. “We can’t wait for players to start digging.”

The Elder Scrolls Online: High Isle Chapters will launch on PC, Mac, and Stadia on June 6, and on Xbox and PlayStation consoles on June 21.
