The Lost Ark review is underway – the excellent MMO

Lost Ark is pretty much the most perfect MMO I’ve ever played. Combat is fluid and responsive, making me feel vulnerable and strong in equal measure; progression is dynamic, constantly rewarding me with meaningful choices and surprising turns; each system is carefully designed to interact with each other associated, and powered by a robust tutorial. The whole experience made me a little concerned about the design of the MMO This My wallet and free time are fine.

Better with friends. The reason this is an ongoing review is because I spend most of my gaming time on private news servers, which makes dueling, partying, chatting, and forming guilds challenging. I’ve managed to get into the occasional million-health boss fight, flying kites around it and dumping abilities for over half an hour, but I still need more time to run dungeons with my mates to see how the “massively multiplayer” shard goes with this MMORPG gel has the right player base.

Early conclusions, though, are that most of The Lost Ark is great. The story is bland, and even though some mission designs are ludicrously mechanical by MMO standards, Lost Ark wins in almost every other department. The environment design is sometimes jaw-dropping, with snow-capped mountains concealing sky-high tombs, idyllic spring forests, and deep caves bisected by thunderous waterfalls. Combat feels expressive and tactile, and thanks to the multitude of class specialties, there is tremendous flexibility in creating builds. Meanwhile, the dungeons and their bosses incorporate arena mechanics to create climactic battles reminiscent of the final stages of Super Mario World.

Duel is a great example of Lost Ark establishing itself as a top-notch MMO. In other isometric dungeon crawlers like Albion Online, duels are essentially stat checks – a novelty match in which two players race against each other to reach zero health. Lost Ark takes a different approach, allowing players to win duels by knocking opponents out of the ring, like in the popular fighting game series Soulcalibur. It’s a small touch, but it gives characters who tend to crowd control a fighting chance against a pure DPS build, especially if you can catch and punish those who try to kite you on the edge of the arena.

Lost Ark is full of similar flourishes, changing the MMO formula enough to make familiar mechanics and environments feel fresh. The characters, design and plot lines are all knockoffs of other legendary MMO and action RPG series.

I’m a little concerned about how well-designed MMOs will do to my wallet and my spare time

Diablo is an obvious touchstone, with hordes of demons pouring into the embattled medieval town. There is also a touch of World of Warcraft here, which can be seen in the way the guild operates, and it can be seen in the rigidity of the Lost Ark fetching quest. But there are more influences and ideas in its gimmicks. It borrows ideas from just about every popular action RPG I can think of. There’s a highly stylized gunfight that mimics Devil May Cry, and there’s a gun weapon based on Monster Hunter.

Like all of these great games, Lost Ark is a constant struggle for better loot. When the rest of the game is excellent – especially in an MMO world – the bland story and the occasional rote quest are easy to accept, but I do find this aspect a bit cumbersome. Free-to-play MMOs often rely on “whales” spending hundreds or thousands of dollars on the game, and I can’t help but feel like this game is testing my willingness to spend money on convenience. This addictive game loop has a dark side, so keep in touch with your friends as they venture into this exciting new world.

We’ll have a full rating review in a few days, but we can already say Lost Ark is worth checking out. Before you ask: yes, there’s a fishing minigame, and yes, it’s really good.
