The next Epic free game is the king of modern city builders

City-building games have been a mainstay of PC gaming since the first SimCity launched in 1989, but there is no doubt that the current king of the genre is Cities: Skylines. If you haven’t tried Colossal Order’s peaceful city builder, you’re in luck: it’s Epic’s free-to-play week starting March 10th.

Of course, this week you can choose from reboots of classic arcade games Centipede: Charge and Black Widow: Charge – as well as free-to-play monster-hunting game Dauntless’s Epic Slayer Kit. Starting March 10 at 8AM PST/11AM EST/4PM GMT, the free-to-play game will switch to Cities: Skylines, normally $29.99 or your region’s same price. If you don’t already own it, you should definitely grab a copy, as Cities: Skylines has turned into an expansive and expressive city builder that has successfully surpassed SimCity as the genre’s flag bearer.

Once you get the hang of the base game, there’s a ton of add-on DLC to consider. The most recent is a new airport expansion project that, in addition to allowing you to build and manage airlines from your city, has added new forms of ground transportation such as high-speed light rail and high-capacity buses.

Here’s the 2015 launch trailer:

If you want to expand your Cities: Skylines game, you don’t need to spend any money either – we’ve put together a handy list of the best Cities: Skylines mods that add new maps to the game , buildings, etc.
