The original ending of the Assassin’s Creed series sent Desmond flying into space

If you weren’t happy with how Desmond Miles’ story ended in Assassin’s Creed III, know that we almost got something One a lot of Even stranger. According to Assassin’s Creed III director Alex Hutchinson, the third installment in the Assassin’s Creed series almost ended with Desmond flying into space.
In a recent interview with Eurogamer, Hutchinson told the outlet that the now long-running Assassin’s Creed series was originally intended to be a trilogy, which ended in the destruction of Earth. However, while the rest of the planet was forced to deal with looming death, Desmond and former Abstergo Industries researcher Lucy Stillman got an arguably better deal. According to Hutchinson, the pair were originally going to board a spaceship together and head to a new planet where they would become the new Adam and Eve and create a new civilization.
News of Assassin’s Creed nearly alternate endings first surfaced late last year, when Lars de Wildt, a researcher on conspiracy theories, religion and other cultural beliefs in digital media at KU Leuven, published a research paper filled with interviews with various Assassins Creed Developer back in 2019. In de Wildt’s article, prominent Assassin’s Creed developers — such as Hutchinson and Assassin’s Creed co-creator Patrice Désilets — share their initial plans for Assassin’s Creed III with researchers, including an interesting fact about why Lucy gave that name.
“That’s why she’s called Lucy, after Australopithecus afarensis,” Désilets said. It’s a reference to a collection of fossils dating back nearly 3.2 million years, the first female hominin, affectionately named Lucy.
Of course, these are not the performances of the first installment of the Assassin’s Creed series. While the universe was intact, neither Desmond nor Lucy were so lucky.However, while it may not be a Word Legacy, the two characters did spark a series that would later span 12 main games and 17 spinoffs. Assassin’s Creed Valhalla, the latest installment of Assassin’s Creed, will launch a new expansion on March 10.
