The ‘real’ Monkey Island 3 is coming this year
This isn’t an April Fool’s joke — the “real” Monkey Island 3 comes from the original creator of the adventure game series, and the release date for Return to Monkey Island has been pushed back to this year. This is a collaboration between Lucasfilm Games and Devolver Digital, set after the events of Monkey Island 2.
On April Fool’s Day, Monkey Island series creator Ron Gilbert made a joke on his Grumpy Gamer blog that he “decided to make another Monkey Island,” but no one took it seriously. Today, announcing the return to Monkey Island, Gilbert admitted he was “sad about the April Fool’s joke, so over the weekend I whipped this up so no one was disappointed”.
Return to Monkey Island is the sixth game in the long-running pirate game series, however, it will be canonically set to replace Monkey Island 3. Ron Gilbert has repeatedly stated that LucasArts’ own Curse of the Monkey Island – which was produced after he left the company – is going in a completely different direction than he envisioned, so his third game will be stuck in Monkey when Guybrush is a kid. Restart after the Big Whoop carnival at the end of Island 2.
Return to Monkey Island release date
Return to Monkey Island will be released in 2022.
Monkey Island’s secret directors Ron Gilbert and Dave Grossman — who themselves helped lead Telltale’s fifth game, The Monkey Island Story — are leading it, with Dominic Amato returning as Guybrush Threepwood, Danny Delke returns as Murray (introduced in COMI, so this is a character that hasn’t been reconnected). Original series composer Michael Land, Clint Bajakian and Psychonauts 2’s Peter McConnell reunite for the first time since escaping Monkey Island.
As for the game itself, the site shows Dogfight Island from the original game, where the main villain LeChuck’s cursed ship is docked. The trailer features a skeleton pirate playing LeChuck’s theme song, with Murray jumping out of the shadows to listen. The graphics appear to be consistent with the two special editions of the first game.
In addition to having an impact on all point-and-click adventure games ever made, the first two games helped launch the career of Double Fine’s Tim Schafer.
