A Georgia man has been convicted of wire fraud and sentenced to three years in federal prison for fraudulently applying for a COVID-19 relief loan and then using a significant portion of it to buy $57,000 worth of Pokemon cards. The prized fire-breathing dragon card has now been confiscated to the government as part of the prosecution.

On March 7, Vinath Oudomsine pleaded guilty to one count of wire fraud. In addition to the jail time, Oudomsine must pay $85,000 in restitution and a $10,000 fine, and be released under supervision after serving three years.

Oudomsine initially applied for a small business COVID relief loan around July 2020, claiming to run a 10-employee entertainment services business with a trailing 12-month turnover of $235,000. In August 2020, he took out an $85,000 loan, and then used $57,000 of that to buy a Charizard trading card.

Charizard cards dating back to the early days of Pokemon TCG are known to be especially valuable. Back in 2020, rapper Logic spent more than $220,000 on the first edition of Charizard cards, and an appraiser in Logan Paul’s Pokemon card unboxing stream said some holographic Charizard cards could fetch as much as $750,000 at auction Dollar.

“COVID-19 disaster loans are issued by the government to help businesses struggling to survive during the pandemic, not for trivial collectibles,” said FBI Special Agent Philip Wieslar in Atlanta.
