This Doom mod is a combination of System Shock, Prey and Aliens – and a demo
If there’s one thing the original Doom game didn’t lack, it’s great mods that completely change the experience. New Doom mod Siren is a creepy new survival horror game in the style of System Shock, FEAR, Prey and Aliens – and now there’s a new demo to try out.
While id Software attempted a Doom survival horror game with Doom 3 nearly 20 years ago, more recent titles (like the fantastical Doom Eternal) place more emphasis on action than horror. This leaves room for modders to create their own fear of Doom, something they often offer.
Siren is a new mod from creators Dithered Output that has been in development for at least two years – the latest 0.6 version is now playable in the new demo. The modders said their goal was to create “an experience that’s closer to an Alien game, but with the variety and gameplay benefits of the Doom roster.”
The demo is out now, and you can also check out the latest trailer below. The alien influence is palpable, but there’s also a more immersive sim feel when playing it, similar to System Shock – although the terrifying titular smoke monster is like a Prey thing. To play it, you’ll need a copy of the live demo version of GZDoom and either Doom II or Final Doom. But be warned: even in normal mode, it’s pretty hard.
For the better Doom mod, Ashes 2063 is basically Fallout from Doom, a melee-focused mod where you can steal NFTs by intercepting them.
