Elden Ring system requirements appeared on Steam, but were quickly pulled

This mod unlocks Elden Ring’s 60 fps cap at your own risk

No one told FromSoftware, but I just unlocked Elden Ring’s annoying 60 fps cap on PC. I can finally run around Stormveil Castle at a smooth 90 fps, or lock it to whatever number I want, as every PC game should allow. It’s a pretty straightforward process, but I’m not sure the current downsides are really worth it.

Unlocking Elden Ring’s framerate is possible thanks to this handy mod by Github user uberhalit. As they explain, the mod doesn’t actually modify any of Elden Ring’s game files, but rather “patches the game’s memory at runtime”. You must start the game from a custom launcher, which also comes with some new features, including widescreen support, game speed modifications, FOV options, and the ability to die without losing runes.

This mod is some extra settings and some cheating tools, and there are certain risks involved in using it. As with all other Elden Ring mods (such as this cool pause mod), you’ll need to disable Elden Ring’s built-in Easy Anti-Cheat for it to function properly. If you follow this guide from Windows Central, it’s a quick and reversible process, but doing so will force the game into offline mode. With the mod turned on, you will not be able to summon co-op players, be hacked, or see messages and bloodstains.

This is a disadvantage to consider. Another reason is that if FromSoftware detects mods or cheats while online, it may issue a ban to players – even if you use them offline. Therefore, you should always remove all mods before attempting to start the game in online mode. No one seems to know for sure if doing this will avoid the ban altogether (if I get banned in the next few days, I think I will), but this method obviously works for older Souls games. That doesn’t exactly fill me with confidence. From the “Inappropriate Activity Detected” warning on my main menu, it’s clear the game knows what I’m doing.

So it’s an anti-cheat grey area that requires offline mode and a separate launcher to work, what exactly do I get out of this? On my fairly decent PC (RTX 3060, Ryzen 5700G 3.8 GHz, 16GB RAM), the Elden Ring performed a little better, and a lot depends on where I am in the world.

In the narrow hallways and courtyards of Stormveil Castle, the benefits are obvious, but while riding on Limgrave’s grassy hills, the speed stays around 60 fps, and I still get the precipitous drop in regularly scheduled shows that everyone is complaining about. Maybe those with more powerful gear will get more out of this mod, but for now it’s hampered by Elden Ring’s worst ongoing issue: poor optimization.
