Valve updates Half-Life 2 with new UI ahead of Steam deck launch

Steam Deck is almost here, and Valve is busy putting the final touches on launch preparations for its handheld gaming PC, including updating its library of classic games. The developers have turned their attention to Half-Life 2, deploying the biggest patch in more than a decade. However, an update found in its beta branch shows that Valve (much like G-Man) still has plans for Gordon Freeman.

as found follower, “Half-Life 2” now has a brand new user interface, which is undoubtedly designed for the Steam platform. Larger text in the game’s main menu and in-game HUD, which both have larger selectable areas to accommodate touchscreens and portable PC touchscreens.

Half-Life 2: Episodes 1 and 2 received the same update, and we’ll likely see other Valve favorites like Team Fortress 2, CS:GO, and Portal receive similar overhauls.

Here is a comparison of the old and new UI:

You can check it out for yourself by adding “-gamepadui” as a launch parameter for any Half-Life 2 game, just don’t forget to activate their beta branch.
